I love to read and I am always looking for a good book. This may sound like a silly idea, but what do you think of starting a book club. Someone can suggest a book to read and than we can talk about it. I don't know if this idea will work, but I thought it might be worth discussing.
As I said, I am always looking for something good to read. So, has anyone read any good books lately that they could recommend?

What kinda books do you like to read MAC? I like biographies, humorous, classics, etc. I especially like Laurie Notaro(Autobiography of a Fat Bride) and Olivia Goldsmith(First Wives Club).

The book club idea is right up my alley at this point I'm also thinking about writing some short stories, and a screenplay. We'll see if I get started on any of it I just started reading "Can You Keep a Secret" by Sophie Kinsella. She is the author of the "Shopaholic" series. Bare bones description - A woman, who is afraid to fly has a few drinks before boarding a plane. She is seated next to a stranger (man). The flight becomes very turbulent and in her fear and tipsy state she tells the stranger all of her deepest secrets (sort of a stream of conscience), assuming that they are going to die. When the plane lands safely, she's embarrassed, but figures she will never see him again. She is very wrong as he turns out to be a very important person that she repeatedly has to have contact with. It is just light fun, don't know that there would be too much to talk about....not much symbolism, etc. ;D I've also read fairly recently - Rocket Boys (the story behind the movie October Sky) Stealing Time (the story behind the Time/AOL merger) DaVinci Code (this is a good one for discussion!)

Ooooh, good idea! That book sounds hilarious, Maisy! I'm going to look out for it. Some recommendations of my own? You really can't go wrong with the classics! My favourites are Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen (grrr, Mr Darcy and the most lively heroine ever written), Tess of the Durbervilles, by Thomas Hardy (the world is beautiful through his eyes), and Middlemarch, by George Elliot (not for lightweights! The detail is absolutely mindblowing). What I love about the classics is seeing how people behaved a few centuries ago. For all our computers and big buildings and cleverness, and for all we'd like to believe we are no different and better, essentially we're just the same as we've always been. It's so fascinating. And slightly reassuring, too... I have more recommendations for later, if you guys are keen ;D

This may be a bit of a "teen" book, but Romette and Julio is extremely good! It's the backwards version of Romeo and Juliet...it's a really good discussion book too! Um, another one is The Shivering Sands by Victoria Holt, it's a good one, kinda old, but good. Another good one is Flipped by Wendilian something-a-monether... I dunno. Those are all good. Flipped and Romette and Julio I guess are considered "teens" books, and TSS is an older book. They're all good tho.

Okay, it looks like we have a good start at a book club. I like to read all types of books and am willing to read just about anything you guys suggest. Some of my favoriate authors are Nora Roberts, Janet Evanovich, Sandra Brown, and John Paterson to name a few.
I have never been part of a book club before so I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. I went the the Barnes and Noble site and looked under book clubs and found this book. It sounds kind of interesting.
The Intelligencer by Leslie Silbert - This debut novel blends espionage and literary history: young private eye Kate Morgan must decode an ancient manuscript at the center of a 21st-century spy game -- and solve the murder of one of history's greatest writers.
We can also go to the New York Times list of best sellers and try to find a book from that list that we can all enjoy. Like I said, I am willing to read anything. Let me know what you want to do?

I don't know what you guys think, but we should designate a leader. I think it should be MAC since the whole book club thing was her idea. Maybe we could take turns picking the books that we would read or something like that. I don't know. What do you guys think?

I am never without a book and I usually read more than one at a time. Before I went on vacation to Texas- I remembered that I had used my favorite photo of Luke as a bookmark. I was so determined to take "that particular picture" along for inspiration that I looked through stacks and piles and bags of books. I never did find the picture, although someday it will fall out of some volume. However, I will share the plethora of bookmarks I found abandoned. I had kids photos, playing cards, coins, missing notes, dry cleaning receipts, shopping lists and THE WORST being the paper backing off a Carefree pantyliner and THE BEST being two crisp Benjamin Franklins. For our international friends, that's two- one hundred dollar bills. See... it pays to read at my house-
Owen take note and I'll loan you my favorite racy bestseller....HurlT

Yay, a book club, a book club I just love reading and usually also read quite a lot of books in English, so I'd love to join in the conversation. ;D Although I'm more of the Fantasy/SF/Cyberpunk type of person, I also like the classics (Joyce, Goethe, Shakespeare,...) and their like...

kind of jumping in late on this but I personally LOVE the Shopaholic series. I just finished the latest one. (Not to mention, the main character's boyfriend is a Luke! haha)

I think this is a great idea, MAC. Pick a book and let's see how it goes. I was in a book club once and we met once a week and had planned to have read X number of chapters to discuss at each of the meetings. Maybe we could have a thread for a grouping of chapters, and folks can join in as soon as they reach that chapter.
It would be fun if we could find a book somewhat related to the boys. Maybe a book they mentioned reading. I can't think of anything right now other than the biographies they both are into.

My dear, dear Librarian I am so happy to hear that you have been part of a book club before. Since you are the one with the most experience, I think you should be the leader of the group. All in favor.
I was going to suggest we read the DaVinici Code but I see that Masiy already read it. It would be nice if we could find something that no one has read yet. I don't have any other suggestions. So, someone pick a book!
HT, you are not the only one who uses pictures of the Wilsons as bookmarkers. I do it also, in fact I left a picture of Owen that I was using as a bookmarker in a book I loaned to a coworker. She came by my desk to return the picture. She just handed the picture to me with this bewildered look on her face. She didn't ask who it was and I didn't offer. I don't think she would understand the fascination.

Been thinking (Oh no...)- Since so many tuned into the New Years Resolution thread, it seems to be an area of mutual interest. Every month the publishing industry is churning out a new self-help or motivational read. MAC a trip to Barnes and Noble checking out the new arrivals may lend an interesting choice for our group. I suspect we all have different fiction preferences and this arena might give us a topic of commonality and some insight about why "we click" or why "we struggle." Just a thought... Gals- offer feedback on this idea. HT

"...And I dont think I'm in, either. No gang!" Sorry but I thought of that Dignan quote when I realized I'm getting too busy w/ work to be in the book club -- even though I think its a great idea. I feel a lot better, my knee is doing great, and I'm starting to work from home a little bit. All sooner than I expected I've got spring fever and can't wait to get out and about.
