Blue, The Host sounds a bit like The Andromeda Strain on steroids. I really liked the book and the original movie, and I like all those books about infectious diseases on a rampage, such as The Hot Zone, etc. I bet I would like The Host. The only Mitchener book I've read is The Source, which I loved. I have his book Texas which I started to read but never finished. Don't know why as it was really good up to the point where I dropped it, so I should pick it up again. Taylor Caldwell is probably best known for her book Captains And The Kings which was made into a TV mini-series in the 1980's. She wrote many many books. I've only read a few of them but every one I've read has been very good. Good enough to make me want to read all of her books. ;D

I'd like to see that Twilight dvd when it's available. I know you all said the movie wasn't very good but maybe it will be good just enough to perk my interest in reading the book. I would certainly agree with you if it were, say, Marley & Me or LOTR or Harry Potter or even Narnia. But Twilight the movie is terrible - its so terrible, its almost offensive. (Okay, okay, I might be prejudiced. It was sort of Hate at First Sight for me and Robert Pattinson. SInce then I've been getting terrible nightmares - he has replaced Owen in my dreams...I haven't slept properly in such a long time now...)

Off-topic a bit but since the title was raised, I've read all the Narnia books. I've read a few others by C. S. Lewis which led me to read Thomas Merton, The Seven Storey Mountain.

I just saw the movie Prince Caspian, and like all movies it was 'eh' compared to the book. It did make me want to read the series again though. I'm glad you're almost done with Twilight startip . . . so now you need to go get New Moon!
I have to start writing down Tex's book recommendations . . . and then remembering to bring the list to the book store/library with me!
I just saw the Twilight movie. And if I hadn't already loved the books, there's no way I would have read them from the movie. It was just so . . . not the book!!!!!

I finished Testimony Of Two Men (Taylor Caldwell) a few days ago. OMG, it was just as good the second time around as the first! ('Course, it was 20 years ago that I read it, and I have read other books since so....). I got a bunch of used T. Caldwell books via Amazon.com. Caldwell is so good I have to read all of her books. She remains my fave novelist - until maybe I read the Willa Cather and Eudora Welty novels I just ordered. I loved My Antonia (Cather) when I read it in high school.
Another author I admire is Sharon Kay Penman. She writes historical novels that take place in medieval Britain. I can tell by her writing that she spends a tremendous amount of time researching her subject time period before she writes a book.
My sister is a total James Lee Burke fan. He writes novels that take place during the U.S. civil war. Most (or all) of them take place in Louisiana. As it is possible to take Da Vinci Code tours in France and England, it's possible to take Burke Tours in Louisiana. My sis loaned me his novel, White Doves At Morning. I should read it as she has good taste.
When I was in university, I used to like Gothic romance novels, and my fave author was Victoria Holt. I liked Mistress of Mellyn, On The Night Of The Seventh Moon, and another one which dealt with 19th century Australia. (Darn it, I can't remember the title!)
I'm embarrassed to say I used to like Danielle Steele too - until her books got too repetitive for me. Remembrance was my favorite though maybe just because it was the first Steele I read.

I used to love Victoria Holt . . . I read everything the library had. Didn't she write as Philippa Carr as well?

Didn't she write as Philippa Carr as well? Yes she did. From what's indicated at Amazon, she may have written more books as Philippa Carr than as Victoria Holt! So maybe it was Philippa Carr who occasionally wrote as Victoria Holt.... ;D Nice to see we have similar taste, Blue.
