Thanks for the info, texasgirl - I just suddenly realised that I genuinely didn't have a clue, even though I know I have watched plenty of films shot outside CA! As for quirky, well, like Wes Anderson and others have said you wouldn't have much of a story without a quirky character and some pain, would you? Who wants to read a story or watch a movie about perfectly "normal" people who have no foibles or conflict at all in their lives. Where is the story in that? Would be awfully boring to read/watch. In fact, has such a story ever been written/filmed? Oh yea - I meant more in terms of looks actually, as much as anything - Hollywood *tends* (though not always) to be fond of its beautiful people, sometimes as the expense of talent, whereas smaller operations tend to be less so - and as basically the whole of the Brit TV/film industry is, relatively, a small operation made up of even smaller ones, that gives a little more room than you might find sometimes in Hollywood for quirkiness... which can only be a good thing. Yeah, you have to have a bit of human quirkiness generally or a film would be very dull indeed! Idiocracy keeps coming up - going to have to go move that one up my lovefilm list I guess!

Yes, you're right that Hollywood tends to favor the most attractive actors. But I don't think it's all their fault. I think a lot of their choices are related to audience preferences, and audiences tend to want to look at pretty people, not ordinary people. It's just a fact of human nature.
Same applies to TV. Even the actress who stars in Ugly Betty (America Farrera - spelling?) isn't ugly at all, in my opinion. Even with her "show" makeup.
I think indie films tend to be a little more egalitarian as far as actor's appearances go. But that may be partly due to the fact that those ordinary-appearing actors can't get hired by big Hollywood studios simply because of their less-than-10 appearance.
To bring this thread back to Luke Wilson, I've been on a Cary Grant kick (speaking of attractive actors!). I'd like to see some of those old movies remade, and I can easily picture Luke in CG's part in some of them. For example, how about The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer* and Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House? Maybe even An Affair To Remember. And we've already discussed Luke being perfect as Walter Eckland in Father Goose.
Edited to add: *Of course, the titles would have to be updated. Bobby-soxer has no meaning today. ;D

[/quote Oh yeah - it's kind of a vicious circle. But as you say, for whatever reason (whether by design or necessity) smaller filmmakers do tend to give more opportunities to less-than-perfect-looking actors, which is cool. And we've already discussed Luke being perfect as Walter Eckland in Father Goose. Heehee, I can so see that - giggling muchly at the thought
