Ok, here it goes...
Transcript
Dave - My first guest is in a new film entitled The Family Stone which opens December 16th. Please welcome, Luke Wilson. -applause- Dave - How you doin'?
Luke - Good. Thanks for having me.
D- When you were... you grew up in Texas right? Is that where the family is originally from?
L- Yes.
D - What were the Holidays like for you as a kid down there then?
L - Um..
D - Good, right?
L - Um... Yeah, we always had a good time. We always try to get together... it's always nice to spend it all together.
D - Now what I know from you and from visiting on the show and so forth and talking to one of your other brothers, is that like kids, there always is fighting that happens in every family doesn't it?
L - Yeah, um... I mean... we're all pretty close but we've been known to scrap here and there.
D - Actual fights? Fist fights?
L - Um.. we haven't had an actual physical fight since like 1990. But , uh um... alot of the physical fights stopped when Owen, I'd say around '88 or '89, he discovered mace - pepper spray.
D - (Laughs) So, that cut down on...
L - So, that kinda cut down on it for me. Started showing alot more respect around that time.
D - (laughs) Did he ever discharge a can of mace on you?
L - I mean yeah. That's kind of how he honed his technique. (laughs) There was no argument or small disagreement that Owen didn't feel couldn't be solved with a can of mace.
D - (laughing) That experience is obviously disabling, is that what it is?
L - Yeah. When the police say in the newspaper that it's a mild burning sensation, that's a real understatement.
D - Yeah. (laughing)
L - Yeah, you feel like hell for about 17 - 20 minutes. But the only time I'd ever really argue with him was when I knew he didn't have the time to go to the police supply warehouse. Or if he was in the shower. (laugh) That's the time I would take to air my grievances.
D - And then did everybody go to Los Angeles at the same time or did just Owen? Is that how it worked out?
L - We all kinda moved out at generally the same time. Owen was already out... this was around '93 and uh... my brother, Andrew, left on a Tuesday morning on a 1976 Kawasaki 500. It was pretty cherry, Dave. (laugh) Uh... no windshield... not exactly a touring bike. I left a couple days later on a Thursday morning. And I drove ten hours to Cerro Blanco right outside El Paso. And I pull in to get a cup of coffee. There's really only the cafe and the gas station. And I come out and I look over and I see my brother Andrew at the gas station. It was pretty incredible... there's nothing there.. I mean we hadn't been communication and um... I walk over and I can immediately sense something's kinda wrong. He's a very confident guy. I walk up. He just seems a little off. And I say "Hey man, how you doin'?" He kinda turns to me, completely wind whipped and (Luke puts his hands on the sides of his face and pulls his skin back tight) "Hey man, how you doin'? Uh... will you take this bag and put it in the car? It'll cut down on the drag." (laughter) And so I take his bag and I kinda put it in my car. Um... Honestly, when I pulled out of Cerro Blanco that day and back on to 20, I felt pretty sure that was the last time I'd see him alive. Um... it was a bittersweet moment. (laughter)
D - I would think so. (laugh) But... uh... everybody obviously made it out to LA...
L - Yeah, we all made it alive. (laugh)
D - Then, did you all move in with your older brother? Is that what the deal was?
L - We all kinda moved in together in LA. And kinda moved to (laughing) different safe houses around town.
D - And the early days, which probably didn't seem like it at the time, were perhaps the most fun, right?
L - They were... yeah. (smiles) I had a good time back then.
D - Now this film, The Family Stone, is that right?
L - Right.
D - Here's a tremendous cast. It's of course... it's uh... Diane Keaton... help me out... ooh ooh Sarah Jessica Parker...
L - Yes, and Craig T. Nelson and Dermot Mulroney... It's a real ensemble.
D - It's... uh... set in a Christmas Card setting... it's a beautiful house, beautiful small New England kind of town. Where was that at?
L - We filmed alot in Culver City, California. (laughs)
D - Is that right? That's not very good! (laughing)
L - That's not very picturesque.
D - No. (laughing)
L - The set we had was beautiful. But then we were on location here in upstate New York and New Jersey.
D - Was that fun for you? I mean you look a little different in the movie. Or am I just mis-perceiving something?
L - Actually, I think it was pretty brave of me... I put on about 18lbs. for the movie, which alot of your younger actors... they are too vain to do that.
D - (laughs) They wouldn't make the commitment.
L - Your Jamie Foxes' and your Mcconaugheys'... I mean they can be playing WC Fields and have a six-pack. Their just not willing to go the distance. (laugh)
D - (laughing) From what I understand of the film, It wasn't really required of your character to be that heavy...
L - I had just kinda let myself go. (laugh)
D - (laughing) That's alright. There's nothing wrong with that. Diane Keaton... what was she like? Did you know her before the film?
L - No. I didn't know her before. She's a screen legend and I... we got along pretty well. We'd do a scene and sometimes I could just feel somebody looking at me. And I'd look over and she's be staring at me and she would say "Where are you from?" (laughing)
D - (laughing) What does that mean?
L - I, I, I mean at one point, I chipped my tooth on a bottle... I showed up at work the next day and she said "Oh, I have a great dentist". And it was just kind of a small chip... so I didn't do anything about it. Then about a month later, the movie ends and she writes me a nice note and um... it has the name of the doctor and I called the guy and it was a psychiatrist. (lots of laughter) I don't know how to take that... I mean, I don't feel I need to talk to anybody. I'd say one of my biggest flaws is that I'm a workaholic slash perfectionist. (laugh) I mean guys like you and I, Dave... Trump, Clinton, Warren Buffet... over achievers.
D - (laugh) The same kinda guy.
L - Yeah, when I've had 8 to 10 hours of sleep at night, there's not enough time in the day to really do what I need to get done. I mean, I've really been charging hard since I was a kid to the point... I've always had so much on my plate that I didn't even graduate from High School. (lots of laughter) Truth be known. Which is one of the traits.
D - Too many other things going on. Now... none of my business, but did anything untoward happen during the shooting of the film or was all ok?
L - It all actually went pretty smooth, which I mean... you get alot of people together and anything can happen. But we all got along ok.
D - Any clues as to why Diane Keaton thought perhaps instead of dental work you may have needed a little (Points to his head)...
L - I think she just kinda thought I was crazy. I think my accent threw her... I uh... and then the tooth chipping incident. Sometimes, I, um, I am, not big on research for a role and I was supposed to know sign language. And you know, I was having alot of trouble with that. Well, actually, (laughter) uh... I tried to deflect attention from me because the only person worse than me was Craig T. Nelson. And I'd say "Craig, you look like a third base coach". And he'd be like "I know man, I was practicing in my trailer and almost poked my damn eye out. (laughter) It's harder than it looks.
D - One of the family members is hearing impaired and everyone in the cast is signing to the, the brother.
L - It's difficult and Diane had already known it either from another movie or something else... and I just, I had trouble with it. It is a real skill. It's great to know... it's like Algebra to me. (laughter)
D - (laughing) You just kinda made up your own signing.
L - I could only describe it as "Jive". (laughter)
D - Well, I'm sure it was useful nonetheless. Now, uh, Luke let's show the folks a clip of what we are going to see. This thing opens December 16. This is a family Holiday movie, because it's about a family at the holidays and there's kind of a twist, and uh, things turn out different than they begin which is kind of interesting. What are we gonna see, do you know?
L - Uh, It's when I first arrive back at the family homestead and uh, I'm seeing my Mother for the first time. And then also seeing Sara Jessica Parker, my uh, my brother's fiance...
D - I'll just tell the folks that Sara Jessica Parker plays a woman who is all business, uptight, and "A" personality and you are at the other end of the alphabet.
L - Yeah, just a real bohemian, kind of slacker.
D - Yeah, but somehow you just kind of loosen her up...
L - and we hit it off... yeah.
D - Let's take a look. (clip)
D - (laughing) And there you go. Family Stone opens December 16th. Good to see ya.
L - Good to see ya Dave. Thank you very much.
D - Have a Happy Holiday. Luke Wilson.
(I think "Cerro Blanco" is actually supposed to be"Sierra Blanca". But, it sure sounded like Luke said Cerro Blanco. oh well, no biggie.)
