My favorite site Spill is doing a review of Tropical Thunder, and they´re funny. www.spill.com/movie-review/TROPIC+THUNDER/389934Meanwhile I´m reading about protest being organized against Tropic Thunder. I´m not going to post those, but they have not understand the movie, plus this will actually give the movie more advertising.

Oh? what are they protesting against, like what did they find offensive about the movie? lol that review was pretty funny, thanks for posting There is a scene in the movie where they make fun of actors playing mentally challenged people, only in order to win an oscar. Mind you this whole movie is making fun of 'dumb' actors. Now there are groups, activist for the disabled, who want to protest this movie, because they feel this movie makes fun of the disabled. Now they haven't seen this movie, they saw this clip of Robert Downey jr. making fun of actors playing disables. And yes Spill is one of favorite sites to go to, here's my profile, so should you sign up, make me your friend. my.spill.com/profile/absintheblonde

I think they should have seen the whole movie to understand the scene properly in context... I've used that site before last year but I haven't joined the site...

Frat Pack Tribute:
Tropic Thunder Is Amazing by Kevin Crossman
This isn't a full review but I will say that Tropic Thunder is (almost) everything we hoped it would be. First off, it is a true "Ben Stiller movie" much in line with his past projects. In fact, there are number of parallels to Zoolander, including some of those fun celebrity cameos. Which, unfortunately, is the one tiny problem with Tropic Thunder: no Owen Wilson. While Matthew McConaughey is servicable in a role written for Wilson, it is clear how Owen would have played the role and how much better he would have been.
The reason of protests, again from TFPT:
Tropic Thunder News: Simple Jack Site Yanked, Cast Visits the Troops by Rick Duran
Tropic Thunder has finally caused controversy, but not for the reason you'd expect. Dreamworks has pulled simplejackmovie.com off the web, the promo site for Simple Jack, a fictional film in Tropic that Ben Stiller's character Tugg Speedman had starred in. The concept, in which Speedman played a mentally handicapped man, is a spoof of Hollywood actors' Oscar-chasing cliche of playing disabled people. Advocacy groups for the disabled, including the Special Olympics and the Down Syndrome Assn. of Los Angeles, are scheduled to meet with Dreamworks.
It appears the offense is with the tagline on the Simple Jack poster: "Once upon a time... there was a retard." We hope the grievances are settled reasonably becase the site really was hilarious and Tropic Thunder features fictional trailers for films starring its characters, including Stiller's Simple Jack.

I went and saw TT tonight. If you are an RDJ fan go see this movie. He is phenomenal. Matt McC? My sis made the comment he played the character exactly like he was in "For the Love of The Game". Owen was definitely missed. And waaay too much Tom Cruise. I was under the impression that he would be in one scene as a cameo. Unfortunately he's got much more screen time than that.

Yikes, thanks for the heads up, mixedberry. I have never liked Tom Cruise #phbbbt# But i have always loved RDJ and i am looking forward to seeing him in it, i´ll propably wait until it comes to DVD though. If Owen would have been in it, then i would have gone to theater already.

I saw TT last week. The best word I can think of to describe this movie is the same one that Frat Pack used - "amazing". I was blown away by the movie, mostly because of the performances. The acting was fabulous for such a silly premise of a movie. My favorites were Jack Black, and RDJr. Tom Cruise was in it alot, just like Mixedberry said - it was way more than I was comfortable with. But, I have to say his performance just solidified that he is the definition of "creepy" in my book. Also, regarding Owen being MIA, I may be the only one out there, but I couldn't envision Owen in McC's role at all. I'm glad Owen didn't do the movie - that was the most uninteresting character of the entire movie, IMO. Maybe he could have used his ad-lib skills to jazz it up and make it something, though. #dontknow# I didn't laugh out loud a whole lot during the movie, but I was thoroughly entertained. We'll probably buy this one when it comes out on DVD.

I won't go to see TT, first because for the references to people with problems (called retarded) then because I don't like the treatment Stiller deserved to Wilson bros and Vince Vaughn in a time when they have some troubles with their own careers. A cameo of one of the three as far as an important part would had been appreciated by me, yeah also Owen, his ex buddy, could have done a little cameo (something like Meet the Fockers) since filming was going till the end of November 2007 and Stiller wrote the plot. Once I read on this forum that Wes and Ben should have always helped Owen career, and as a mirror Owen career should help Luke career...Now this sin't happening, since neither Luke and Owen have new contracts

I forget to add that Ben gave a big role to Coogan and expressed big appreciation on him: wasn't he the guy supposed to begin Owen to addictions... (with Ben deleting Owen from the movie while he was still in hospital, so I don't think at all that it was Owen decision, he was still struggling for life) .Strange Ben behaviour if it's true: poor Owen completely cancelled, the pusher a big role...

This all depends on how much you believe tabloids and gossip. You can choose not to see the movie and make a stand because of what others say, or you can see it and formulate your own opinion. Despite all the conspiracy theories, I think everything worked out for the best.

sadly it's not gossip that Owen was dropped out from the movie when still in hospital, and nowadays Luke and Owen with no new contracts..... sadly for me nobody is helping them professionally.

I heard Owen was dropped from the movie because he was still very ill. From what I've read it was a mutual decision between Ben, Owen, and probably Owen's family, and maybe even Owen's physicians for all I know.
Is there some reason to assume the worst of Owen's friends that I don't know about?
And do we know Owen & Luke have no new contracts? Where has that been announced? I missed it. Maybe they're taking some time off for a while. Certainly Owen & Luke are popular enough in Hollywood that if they wanted contracts, they could get them. Maybe there are no scripts available at the moment that they like?

I have to say I agree with Texasgal. I never heard that Ben or anyone was doing anything to cut Owen out in a negative way, it was probably for his own good. The timing of what happened, him getting better, was what was most important. Hansel, did you see the articles where Ben talked about how much he cares about Owen? www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/celebrity-interviews/2008/08/19/i-ve-upset-everyone-with-my-new-movie-tropic-thunder-reveals-ben-stiller-86908-20703327/The other thing to remember is that "contracts" are often not announced until after they are already finalized. As fans, we don't know what kinds of films people like Owen and Luke are being offered. Did you see the articles about Luke's agent asking him to read scripts before he says yes to them, because he's done so many films? It's the same with Owen. They've been working incredibly hard for years on end. If they want to take a break, they can. Keep in mind that working constantly and being on a treadmill is not a sign that everything is alright, often that's quite the opposite. I think they deserve some time to themselves, time to sort out their feelings, fall in love, make a life of their own instead of a life that reflects the needs and wants of the media and the fans and the Hollywood machine. I also think you're a bit wrong about Steve Coogan, Hansel. The story about him getting Owen involved in drug use was a total fabrication, a lie from Courtney Love. Whatever people think about what happened in August 2007, most people know that it wasn't Coogan. Keep in mind that Ben, Steve, and Wes all went to visit Owen while he was getting better during that September. These aren't people who are rejecting him or being mean to him. They are probably supporting him in whatever he feels he needs to do to feel better. And notably, that includes the work Owen will do as Jedidiah for the next Night at the Museum film, working with Ben and Steve. And since Wes has always said he would never want to do a movie without Owen, I bet there will be some kind involvement in Fantastic Mr. Fox as well. It will be great if they can keep it a secret so we can all be surprised, too. And the comments about disability being made fun of in Tropic Thunder are a complete and utter misunderstanding from people who never saw the movie. It's lowbrow humor and I don't think Owen missed out on anything by not being a part of it. But it is clear once you see the movie that what Stiller and the gang are really making fun of (or more specifically satirizing) is the Hollywood machinery that makes actors think they will have an Academy Award if they portray someone with a disability. For a while the Hollywood machine rewarded that kind of thing (Tom Hanks, Sean Penn, Robert DeNiro and a number of other actors were applauded for protraying a romanticized version of disability in certain films.) Tropic Thunder satirizes that falseness of Hollywood. It is not making fun of disabled persons, but the actors who play them for their own benefit.

#hmm# Remi, maybe McDude's role was so uninteresting bcuz Owen DIDNOT do it? Makes you think how Owen could have improved the role. I wanna watch TT!!!!!!!!!!
Hansel, I agree with you many times, but this time I have to say, Ben-Owen are great pals and so are Ben-Vince. In fact, Vince praised Ben for giving 'em all roles.
I agree with Sugar. It was COURTNEY LOVE who said all those things about Steve. Can her opinion be trusted? The Fantastic Mr. Fox is not a movie Wes wrote, he was asked to direct it. If he doesnot have the power to add characters, how can he take Owen for a role if he isnt suited for it? If Ben was having problems with Owen, dont you think he'd make sure Owen didnt have a cameo in NATM2?
Lastly, cameos are not haphazard things. They require more thoughts than main characters. A badly placed cameo can take the movie down. The cameo by Vince in Zoolander, would it be so much fun if Vince was just a party-goer? No. See, everyone is complaining about Tom Cruise's role since the cameo was extended. Wouldnt it be weird if the TT guys in the forest meet a blonde surfer dude out of nowhere? Owen was not that well in Nov 07, why otherwise did he go to Peru? He didnt do publicity for his own movie. I doubt he'd have done a small role in someone else's.
Hansel, comedy at most times is totally undiplomatic and rude, but thats the fun. TT is a great movie and Owen or no Owen, like I have already declared, I'd definately watch it!
