Owen Wilson signs on for "Marmaduke" Tue Nov 3, 2009 LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Owen Wilson has signed on to voice the rascally Great Dane "Marmaduke," Fox's adaptation of the long-running comic strip. Wilson's boarding is the last piece of the puzzle for the live-action/computer-animated movie, which has shades of Fox's surprise smash "Marley & Me" and follows a family named the Winslows who move from Kansas to Orange County with their dog Marmaduke, a slobbery pooch who creates chaos wherever he goes. The film sees Marmaduke navigate a volatile Mutts vs. Pedigrees turf war, woo the purebred of his dreams and overcome a fall from grace. Judy Greer, Lee Pace and William H. Macy play the humans, while Fergie, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Steve Coogan, Damon Wayans, Marlon Wayans supply the voices. Tom Dey is directing the family comedy, which has a June 2010 release date. Wilson starred opposite a rambunctious lab in Fox's "Marley" and did voice work in the studio's upcoming animated Wes Anderson picture "The Fantastic Mr. Fox." He is following the steps of Bill Murray, who voiced another famous comic strip animal, the lasagna-loving cat "Garfield," also from Fox.

I haven't thought about Marmaduke in years so I don't know what kind of a following it has now. I suppose if they do this right and if they have a great script, it could turn out OK, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I think actors really need to be careful about how much voice-over/animation work they do. (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Cars 2, and now this seems like a little too much within a short period of time, IMHO.)

Another project yay! Its great to see Owen back to normal and totally busy with projects. Nala, you won't have to worry about the amount of VO Owen is doing (he only had like 3 lines in Mr Fox) I think its good he is doing different projects. Doing the same type of film could get annoying for some. (Adam Sandler and his slacker comedy films and characters, Jim Carrey and his constant silly faced and silly sounding characters) I have no idea who Marmaduke is (heard of him) so off to research

hutchshottie: Marmaduke is a comic strip where the dog (Marmaduke) does not speak. Hmm. That's my first concern. Secondly, to me it's just at most a 2nd rate idea. I'm selfish in that I'd like to see Owen doing more movies for adults that aren't merely sequels. Don't get me wrong - I'm really looking forward to Little Fockers and would do somersaults if there was to be a Zoolander 2. It's just that I would like to see Owen in fresh material more often. Marley and Me was released in December 2008. By the time the James Brooks movie is released, it might be almost 1-1/2 years in between movies. Wah!

I too would like to see Owen stick with more adult-level, age-appropriate movies, such as Marley. But it's OK too that he's popular with children. I think doing the variety of film genres that he does might help prevent him from getting "over-used" so that we can see him in many different kinds of roles for many years to come. That's a great situation for me! It's been so many years since I've read comics that I'd forgotten Marmaduke doesn't speak. Maybe Owen's voice will be Marmaduke's thought bubble? Btw, anyone else notice that the paps seem to have lost interest in Owen? We don't see as many photos of him in the fanzines anymore like we used to. Most photos of him that we see have been taken by fans on their cell phones. I'm glad the paps are leaving Owen alone; that's good for him. But not good for me. #dontknow#

I think Marmaduke is a most excellent choice in movie roles for Owen to decide to do. Whoever said Marmaduke is only for children must not read the comic strip in the paper often. I am very excited to know Owen has signed on for this movie. I am looking forward to it very much. #crazylove# #crazylove# #crazylove#
As for a comparison to Marley and me, Marmaduke is part of the family and contributes to everyones life not just for the kids but in the same way as Marley did and continues to do. It's universal if you have a beloved pet, they are family. I loved, loved, loved Marley and me as a movie even tho I cried at the end. I also have the book. I think Owen will give the character Marmaduke a wonderful perspective.
While Marmaduke may not speak in the sense of using a spoken language his personality and antics are what everyone who follows the comic strip relates to. They are common experiences that bring out the humor in everyday life. In case your wondering about how the comic strip came about I have copied a short history for you.
"Marmaduke is a newspaper comic strip drawn by Brad Anderson from 1954 to the present day. The strip was created by Anderson, with help from Phil Leeming (1955-1962) and later Dorothy Leeming (1963-1969). The strip revolves around the Winslow family and their Great Dane, Marmaduke. The strip on Sundays also has a side feature called "Dog Gone Funny," in which one or more panels are devoted to dog anecdotes submitted by the fans. Anderson, who says he draws on Laurel and Hardy routines for his ideas, received the National Cartoonists Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award for the strip in 1978."
As for "adult roles" I think all of the movies Owen has made have been well rounded and fun movies that you can watch over and over and never get tired of and always pick up something more each time you see them. For me that is what a "well done" movie does for you. It's like listening to music, you don't often listen to a song or music just once usually it gets played over and over and you sing along and it keeps your interest. While some of Owens movies I like better than others, each one in its own right keeps you interested along the way.
On another note as for the paps staying away good riddance to them.

But not good for me. #dontknow# At least Owen still gets some publicity in the press, Luke gets hardly anything now unless the article is being negative about him. We always manage to find pics ourselves anyway somehow. I don't mind that Luke doesn't always have the same success as Owen but I'd never want to read one day that he's doing reality shows because I can't stand those. #nono# I remember Marmaduke and it seems a surprise choice to make as a film but with a good script it can be a success. It's going to be part live action and the child in me loved Cats and Dogs so I may like Marmaduke too.

Iluvtexas, I apologize if my posting offended you. In fact, I agree with most of what you wrote.
I have 5 cats and have had dogs in the past so I am well aware of what pets contribute to a family, especially for a "family" of one person; namely, me. My house would be lonely and empty without my pets. So I didn't mean to imply that Owen's participation in Marley was stupid or childish or not "adult"enough. That's not what I meant.
And you're right about music. I STILL listen to music of the 1960's even though it is too old to be played on oldies stations anymore. And I can't tell you how many times I listen to certain classical symphonies ever since I "discovered" them as a child. My parents being music lovers and classical music lovers, I probably heard those symphonies in utero!
And no, you're right: I was never a regular Marmaduke reader, and it's been years since I did read any Marmaduke. My loss. If the movie continues Marmaduke's character as non-speaking, certainly there is a place for a voice to convey Marmaduke's thought bubble. Why not?
And yes, as I said before, I'm glad for Owen's sake the paps are leaving him alone.
Lonegazer, I apologize to you too. I didn't mean to omit Luke. Owen gets as much negative press and comments as Luke. With Luke, they're unfairly picking on his weight and with Owen, they're picking on everything but his weight.

Not offended and at first I wondered what you meant as I was just posting a thought and then I realized my reply noted at the top in response to your posting....I never noticed that before I just hit the reply button because it provides a blank page to post something... ;D The goof is on me...my thought was just random to the conversation...so sorry for the confusion if any....
