Hiya everyone - I wanted to get your opinion on something and this forum seemed like a good place to ask 'cos all you guys & gals seems so lovely... I've been brunette for 35 years and I've got a hair appointment booked to go BLONDE in a few days time. Seemed like a good idea at the time but I'm getting cold feet the nearer the time gets. Anyone got any advice as to whether I should go through with this? Or anyone done the same (or reverse)? This bewildered Wilsionette needs advice...

Let's see..... is your hair super-dark or is it a lighter brown? What I think is important is the color you're going for. There are lots of different "blondes" - platinum, ash, honey, strawberry. I think you have to see what your original color is and what your skin tone is. Maybe bring in pictures from magazines of hair color you like and really talk it over with your stylist. That way you could get an idea of what look you're going for. And you don't have to do all color. You could have them color your hair a much lighter brown and then do blonde highlights. I don't know, just throwing ideas here. Who knows....you might look better as a blonde!

I don't want to go platinum blonde or anything (too much of a culture shock & way too scary!!!) but a more sort of dark blonde. My skin tone is quite pale in the winter but am big on a tan in the summer. My stylist thinks it's a good idea to go a dark blonde but it's just a bit (well a lot actually) scary to actually go through with it!! Thanks again for the advice though.

I have almost black hair and about 2 years ago i got a gift certificate from my co workers to this upscale salon. So i decided to go lighter. What he did was , make my base color a very light brown and highlight it blonde. It looked so great !! As the roots grew in my aunt kept highlighting it lighter and lighter (until i told her to stop!). she did it a few times with foil and a few times with the cap. I like the cap better b/c it came out brighter and more blonde but it toned down after a few days. I labsolutely loved it. So from my experience I would recomend that you do a light brown base and highlight it blonde and just go for touch ups!! It's easier, cheaper and i think it looks more natural than just being a "bottle blonde!"

You can always go blond gradually. Start with a darker blond base and add a few contrasting highlights. If you like that, then you can amp up the blonde as summer approaches, and be ready to dazzle the crowds with your new blond locks! I'm an auburn girl that went to the blond side a few years ago. It wasn't too scary & I found the gradual "blondness" to work well. Earlier this year, I decided to go back to my auburn roots, with a few saucy red highlights. The beautiful thing about hair colour -> if you don't like it or become bored with it, you can change it!

If you look at my photos in the member photo thread, you can see my hair is naturally dark brown, almost black, and then you can see where I went from super dark to blonde, it was quite a change but now I love it! I only bleached my hair with the intention of dyeing it red but then loved the blonde so much I've been blonde for like 2 years now. The roots upkeep is annoying but it's fun.

If I may add one more thing... I've read that going lighter or blonder will dry your hair out much more than going darker. I don't know if that is true with getting color at the salon, but I've found it to be true for me when I color my hair at home (even just highlights!). Be sure to have a really good conditioner just in case. I don't know if you can get it where you are, but the Bed Head "Self Absorbed" (Shampoo and Conditioner) is what I use.

Remi's right, my hair get's really dried out when I bleach it, It's stripping your hair. I tend to use the aussie brand leave in conditioner, you can get it at any wal-mart or drugstore. Take Remi's advice and be sure to hydrate well.

I'm one of those suckers who always leaves the salon with a load of products anyway - not that I'm a soft touch but just that I like to think I'm treating myself the best I can. No doubt my stylist (whose known me for years) will keep me on the right track!! Oh & Remi - I already use Bed Head stuff - currently the "Control Freak" range - it smells lush too!!
