Great idea! Have you checked out the hsus.org site on the issue, to see if they have any good recommendations? Click here! And click here!It seems like one of the things that is desperately needed is involvement from the scientific community to test fur products and to give proof of where the fur is coming from - sadly in the case of fur, because some fur products and fake fur are legal, it is not as obvious to test for in customs as some other banned materials (like ivory, which you can usually tell is ivory on sight and touch). I also found this article, which discusses how science can be used to show that the fur can actually be dangerous - especially in the case of children's toys made from the fur - the process used causes increased levels of chromium. www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2003/s967844.htmI also found this site, it is not from a news organization and I am not sure how accurate it is. It does claim that there is a price cap on fur items that are exempt from the official labelling process (so, say you buy a $12.99 fur trimmed hat, legally in the US that hat never had to be checked or labelled as to what the fur was). If this is actually true, one thing that could be campaigned for is to have no price cap on fur labelling - so that everything, even those rabbit foot keychains for 50 cents, would have to bear some type of label. It might make people think. www.all-creatures.org/aip/nl-24aug2003-con.htmlMaybe that's an idea?

Here are some thoughts. Feel free to tweak. ************* Dear Ellen, Perhaps you've seen the recent news about how Asian exporters sell the fur of puppies and kittens to European manufacturers. The exporters pass the fur off as fake or exotic. This situation was brought to our attention by a news item on Yahoo ( story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20050301/en_nm/eu_animal_fur_dc). Heather Mills McCartney called for a ban on cat and dog fur imports. We'd like to see the same thing, but we don't have the kind of clout that Heather does. Or that you do. We ask that you use your show to increase global awareness of this unethical trade practice. We are members of The Wilsons, an Internet forum for fans of Owen, Luke and Andrew Wilson, and Wes Anderson. We are a global community, comprised mostly of women, and many of us are animal lovers and pet owners. We'd love for you to visit the forum at thewilsons.proboards20.com/index.cgi to learn more about us. We want to take action and shine a spotlight on this issue, but aren't sure what to do. Please help.

Hi SugarMagnolia! Welcome! (One of my good friends always uses that nickname - I thought it was her at first.) I modified your post by the way - just because the URLs were throwing the page off. Margot, that's great! We can also say that we love her show! She might get a wrong impression of us if she checks this site out.

Okay, could anyone be kind and explain to somebody that doesn't live in the US and doesn't watch TV - ergo ME - what is this about? Is the Ellen Degeneris? If yes, what does she have to do with animals? Somebody? Pleeeeeease...

Ooops... I read the "Animal Lovers" post, so I don't need an explanation anymore.
It's always China, isn't it? A few years ago I had everyone I know, including all the 250 people that work in my company, sign a petition to stop Bear farming (to learn more: http://www.animalsasia.org). Now this... Will they ever stop?
Sometimes it's hard to believe in evolution...

I love your ideas everybody!! I'm leaving tonight for Maine and I will be home on Monday but Luckily my grandmothers has a computer so I will be on. I'm going to take advantage of the treacherously long car ride and dabble in ideas for the e-mail as well!!

Hi Lotus! She is a stand-up comedienne in the US who has a daytime talk show. She is known for supporting animal rights. I haven't watched her show myself, but she has a lot of audience participation and she responds to mail and issues. She is also known for the women she dates, like Anne Heche and Portia de Rossi (hope I spelled her name right!) Here's some links: A fan site I found through YahooHer show site

Cake,
Coincidently I just got the following msg from PETA:
------ Dear Nana,
Many legislators share your desire to stop cruelty to animals and will flex their political muscles for animals if they are convinced that the public supports animal-protection issues. Let them know that you care and that others in your community care, too! Start by writing to your elected officials to express support or opposition to legislation or issues affecting animals. To find out who your representatives are, visit the Congress and Senate Web sites at house.gov and senate.gov. When you write to your legislators, the following simple rules will help you get the best results:
• Identify yourself as a concerned citizen. • Keep your letter brief, preferably one typed page. • Focus on a specific topic. • Be polite and concise. • Write as soon as possible on timely issues so that your opinion can be counted.
Check out PETA’s “Guide to Letter-Writing” for more tips on writing effective letters.
Yours sincerely,
Megan Hartman Activist Liaison MeganH@peta.org 757-622-7382, ext. 8256

Let me know if you need any help.
