The Fantastic Mr. Anderson!
Wes to direct animated Mr. Fox adaptation
29 October 2004
You’ve got to hand it to Wes Anderson – the acclaimed and genius-like director of Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and the forthcoming The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou isn’t one to rest on his laurels.
Instead, he’s dedicated to growing and developing as a director – hence The Life Aquatic is more ambitious than his previous movies, with bona fide action sequences, tricky FX and a scope beyond anything he’s attempted before. And now he’s switching tack again, to his first full-length animated movie – an adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, The Fantastic Mr. Fox.
But we’re not talking any old animation here – no CG or hand-drawn cels for The Fantastic Mr. Wes. Instead, he’ll be relying on old-fashioned stop-motion animation to bring to life Dahl’s twisted and funny tale of a crafty fox who finds himself and his family marked for death by three evil farmers who (quite understandably, we reckon) are pissed about having the wily rascal off half their chicken stocks every night.
It’s safe, we would assume, to say that Anderson was probably inspired to go down this route after working with Henry Selick (who himself directed a stop-motion adaptation of Dahl’s James And The Giant Peach, of course) on the stop-motion animation sequences in The Life Aquatic (all the underwater creatures in the movie are fictional and created by Selick).
But it’s still a major move for a live-action director to delve into animation, so perhaps Anderson was also influenced by the example of Robert Zemeckis, whose CG extravaganza, The Polar Express, opens soon.
At present, there’s no word on when the movie will begin production, or if Selick will oversee the stop-motion. But the project, which is set up at Revolution Studios, will be the second movie in a row that Anderson will co-write with Noah Baumbach, who has seemingly freed up Owen Wilson to concentrate on his acting career.
Still, even if details are sketchy, we’re so excited by The Life Aquatic (and basically anything that the supremely gifted Anderson does) that The Fantastic Mr. Fox is a project we will be keeping a very close eye on indeed.
