I don't know if any of you are Barry Pepper fans. He was in Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile and also When we were soldiers (with Mel Gibson)
Anyway I quite like him so I had a look at a fansite for him and lo and behold he had been writing notes to his fans and even calling them - the notes were unbelievable and if I liked him before then I think I love the guy now. What a sweetheart!
First Note
First of all, from the heart, my warmest appreciation to you all for your kind words and holiday blessings. We also wish you a happy and joyful New Year, may it be a fruitful and inspiring year that springboards us all into the new millennium. I must say this past year has been just that, for us!
We were on the road filming, for eight months of '98 and have just recently had a chance to be home and relax with friends and family. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunities to work with so many talented people as I have, in such a short period of time, and at such an early stage of my career.
This web site blows my mind. It is truly overwhelming and I am flattered by your strong show of support! I also realize the unique opportunity that we share by having a site like this. As an actor I have a responsibility to people like yourself, who take the time out of their day to get on-line and type a note of support and take the hard-earned money from their wallet and stand in-line to watch a film that I'm in. My responsibility, as I see it, is to listen to your comments and advice and bring it to life on the screen in the roles that I play in future films.
As an actor and a writer, I have the ability to express myself on a global scale in a way that can bring change and open minds and hearts. Every day I learn a new way of approaching my work by reading mail or getting on-line and soaking up your observations. There are so many voices out there that don't have an opportunity to be heard or expressed in the same way as I do, so I hope you see some of your thoughtful words and keen observations at work next time you come to the theater. Global expression...it's so cool, I love it!!
On another note, I had an amazing holiday. It snowed on Christmas day and it was so beautiful! If you haven't had a white Christmas, do it one year, you'll really enjoy it. My old Dodge Swinger ("Grace") was a savior every inch of our journey, while we visited family and friends over the holidays. She delivered us over slick black ice and snow covered roads with the greatest of ease. I don't have the heart to replace her with a new car or truck, we've seen a lot of miles together. When I first drove down to find work in L.A. she made it the whole way with an overheating radiator and didn't break down until we arrived at a service station on Wilshire Blvd., in the heart of Beverly Hills. Well that's enough about my car!
Over the holidays, I joined my brothers in a clay pigeon shoot and had a hoot! I hadn't shot a shotgun in several years, let alone hit a moving target, but we were all blessed with good shooting. My oldest brother is the true marksman in the family, he cleans up in his category at these competitions. I've always been heavily influenced by my older brothers and much of what I bring to the screen in my characters stems from my profound respect and admiration of their individual characters as men. We all love the outdoors and feel very much at home in the wilderness, so we fly fish and hike and mountain bike whenever we can be together.
I was recently asked by the Blue Angels to take a flight in one of their FA-18 Hornets and can hardly wait for the day! It supposedly is a 45-minute flight with as much or as little acrobatics as you like!..."Bring it on baby!!!"
I'm just about finished writing my first script ( W.W.I flyers) and it is blossoming into an amazing story. It has been so fulfilling writing a screenplay, especially writing with partners. We are constantly teaching each other so much from our very different points of view. One partner is a writer and the other is a director, so we each have a unique organic approach to the writing and research process. I highly recommend collaborative work with friends, if nothing else, it can be very educational and entertaining.
Well, as you probably know, I just finished filming the GREEN MILE and I am now looking forward to finding my next project. I've recently met with some really cool directors with incredible vision and have read some interesting scripts, so good things are on the horizon.
Well I've rambled long enough for now, so thanks again for all of your love and support. See you at the movies.
Warmest Regards,
BARRY PEPPER
