Thadd Turner makes his mark in the competitive movie industry
by Bill Mead, Tehachapi News Columnist
Thadd Turner was a Tehachapi High School student when I first met him at the tire store operated by his father, Bob “Bear” Turner, in Old Towne. After talking briefly with Thadd on that occasion it was clear to me that this teenager wasn't going to spend his life changing tires.
What I couldn't have guessed then was that years later Thadd would cut a wide swath in the cut-throat movie making business. His achievements there have been impressive with every indication they will become even more so in the near future.
Thadd's Talmarc Productions, a company he owns with his dad, has just re-edited his earlier DVD production Miracle at Sage Creek and added new scenes to create a Christmas story titled Christmas Miracles.
According to proud papa Bob, Miracle at Sage Creek has been a blazing success, selling 500,000 DVD copies around the world. He and Thadd are looking forward to reaching the million mark in sales of Christmas Miracles DVDs during the upcoming holiday season. Already Talmarc Productions claims 34,000 retail outlets for its movies in America, Europe and Asia with the total increasing.
Bob Turner now reports that Thadd has put together an even bigger production called The Hard Ride which he said will lift Talmarc Productions into a more prominent position in the industry when filming is completed early next year. It will feature a cast of major actors headlined by Val Kilmer plus several others with impressive Hollywood credentials. They include Karl Urban, Elizabeth Shue and Luke Wilson, brother of comic actor Owen Wilson, Bob has announced.
Urban is well-known for conspicuous roles in Dune, The Bourne Supremacy and Lord of the Rings. Shue has played major parts in several first-line movies, winning critics' praise most recently for her work in Leaving Las Vegas.
The Hard Ride will be a landmark film for Talmarc for another reason, Bob Turner said. It will be the company's first production that will go into theaters in addition to being offered on DVD.
Although younger than most movie producers, Thadd has won his spurs in the industry through gaining wide knowledge of the details of America's western history. Bob said Thadd has spent years studying western minutae that has helped other movie and TV producers achieve more authenticity in their western productions.
