The Family Stone It's all well said above, and I agree with Tex, it was better than I expected, but also sadder. I was expecting a "belly-hurting" kind of comedy, probably because I didn't read any reviews previous to going. I didn't want to be biased. It worked for me. And I really liked the 'twist' in the end. Great movie. FURG, YOU'LL LOVE IT!!! and you hubby will probably enjoy it as well.

Mr. Furg has graciously allowed me to be accompanied by shari to said movie. It has nothing what-so-ever to do with my behaviour at the Foo Fighters concert.

........................ .................... I really enjoyed Family Stone, because Luke was in it. He made the movie. He was so funny, and everyone in the theater just howled when he had the little pink bow in his hair!! I loved how he interacted with the little girl!
But........... Diane Keaton's role didn't ring true for me........ she just often seemed so..........mean. Like when she called her whole family assholes.........I just felt it was the wrong word choice. And there were other parts too, where she just seemed.........coarse. And Dermot seemed very wooden and set apart from everyone.......... the only time he interacted was in anger, except for the one part............ that part was beautifully done with his Mom and it made me cry. The movie itself made me cry, bc certain important parts just rang so true, about the Mom..................... The whole family just seemed to be mean, then forgive everything, then mean, then forgive everything............... I wouldn't have liked it at all if Luke hadn't been in it, but bc of him, I'm very sure I'll buy it when it comes out on DVD. He was great!!!!!!
It's hard to believe that there are people out there like Meredith,,,,,,, who could just totally alienate everybody without knowing it...............she just totally messed up, over and over and over.............but if not for that, she seemed really.......... likeable.........yeah, I know, I'm weird!! I can never make up my mind!!
Anyone else feel anything like I did???

WF, I agree with you about some of the family characters.
I didn't understand why Diane (the mom - can't remember her character's name) disliked Meredith so much. I don't think it was well-explained to the audience why Diane felt Meredith was so wrong for Dermot - right from the start. If they wanted to base Diane's dislike for her on the basis of the dinnertime conversation, OK. But right from the start? I realize most mothers would prefer their offspring pick different mates than the ones they do because most mothers feel that nobody is good enough for their kid. I understand that. But I think Diane's dislike for Meredith seemed a little disproportionate - just as much as the entire family's dislike for her. It's not as if the family is going to be living with her; just Dermot.
I thought the other daughter - the one who was the mother of the little girl - seemed almost invisible. I kept thinking: why is this character even part of the family? Either give her a role and a personality, or why have her there at all?
Yes, I agree that Dermot's character seemed wooden, undeveloped. Almost as if Dermot was posing rather than acting.
I like all the actors in this movie; it's just that some of the characters seemed off.
Luke DEFINITELY was the draw for me! And he didn't disappoint - as if that were possible!

*****SPOILERS*****SPOILERS*****SPOILERS*****
Tex, DK's character is Sybil, and I thought she was mean to Meredith bc Amy had been poisoning them against her since the said dinner.
I never thought of Dermot as a 'good actor' so I was not surprised about his performance.
At first, I was really put off by SJP's acting, I thought she was such a phony, by then again that was the whole point, her not being true to herself, and I ended up liking her more.
The other character, Susannah, was kindda of invisible, but I thought of that also as part of the diversity of a huge family, cmon it's 5 children, some stand out in the crowd, some don't.
And lastly, I loved Luke's performance bc it seemed very natural, effortless, so...ummm...Luke. And I like that he got to change her in the end, not the opposite.
To me, the best part is when SJP gives her Christmas presents to everybody, she really got to throw the last stone...

*SPOILER*
*clicks heels and chants*
20ft tall Luke, 20ft tall Luke, 20ft tall Luke
*Wakes up* ^^^Sums it all up completely.. I agree with everyones comments, Luke was very natural and believable. He got a laugh in nearly every scene he appeared in, I sensed I wasn't the only person in the cinema waiting for the funny guy to come back on. No one warned me about the crotch scene " I had a dream about you last night" that was hysterical, my eyes nearly popped out of my head. I wasn't moved to tears at all, perhaps because I was expecting to be, or m'be I'm just heartless? Then again I was watching it from a "who the hell are these people get Luke back on screen" point of view. Perhaps I need to go back and watch a 2nd, 3rd and 4th time to be able to give you an in depth review. A couple of things annoyed me, as mentioned in previous posts: I cannot believe a mother would smirk at her sons girlfriend in the way that Sybil does before being introduced to her in the hallway. It just doesn't ring true, no matter what she knew about her. The other thing that bothered me was Luke's jumper at the end of the film, hell it annoyed the crap out of me. It didn't blend with his character at all. All in all a really good film and a cracking day out again with shari, my partner in handbag shopping and Wilson crime Modified to add review, oops

I am up in Madison, New Jersey this week. Yay! A friend of mine works at Drew University. I went to several "Family Stone" sites tonight. I saw the night "bus stop" in front of "the inn". I use quotes because they are in no way a bus stop or inn. I saw the day bus stop where Claire Danes character falls. I saw the jewelry shop and ... I saw the bleachers! Just to think that's where Luke and Craig Nelson shared some weed and a scene! I will do some investigating and try to find the bar and the house! Beautiful town -- very affluent! Do any of you remember if the cast stayed in NYC or if they stayed out in Madison during the shoot? I ask because there is an amazing hotel here. A grand hotel - old school. I was just wondering...
