Luke Wilson would dump a girl if she cheated. He'd have nothing to worry about with Laura Morgan.
Okay, you know how you suspect that those guys on The Sopranos aren't really acting-that they're goombas offscreen as well? Well, similarly, Luke Wilson-who has made a career out of playing adorably likable characters-is really as sweet as he seems. In fact, rude people bug the hell out of him. "In Los Angeles, where I live, sometimes people are so focused on getting ahead that they aren't respectful to one another," says the 34-year-old star. "That bothers me, like when someone bumps into you and doesn't say sorry." Maybe that's why this Dallas, Texas, native is so naturally good at those ready-to-take-home-to-mom leading-man gigs, like in Legally Blonde, Home Fries and the just-released My Super Ex-Girlfriend with Uma Thurman. Luke rings me up from Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he's filming You Kill Me-and when he sweetly tells me in his signature Southern drawl that I can call him back if I need anything else, I have the urge to ask if he's free for dinner with my mother.....say, next Tuesday?
In My Super Ex-Girlfriend,you play a regular guy who dumps his superhero girlfriend. What would it take to make you dump a woman?
I don't know that it would ever be just one thing. Maybe cheating, though I haven't had that happen-at least, that I know of.
Is there a superpower you'd use to make an ex's life a living hell, like all the stuff Uma does to your character in the movie?
I've been lucky to stay on good terms with my exes. It's not like we call each other all the time, but I like to think that if I saw them, it wouldn't be uncomfortable. I don't have vindictive feelings. Some things don't work out, but you don't have to take revenge.
Are you bugged when people peg you as always playing "the boyfriend"?
Some of the projects that I've had the best time with have been more interesting, like The Royal Tenenbaums or Masked and Anonymous, which is a film I did with Bob Dylan. Another favorite was The Wendell Baker Story, a film I made with my brothers Andrew and Owen that will hopefully be released soon. And I did have a really good experience on My Super Ex-Girlfriend with Uma. It was one of the longer productions I've been on, and I still liked everyone at the end. Not that I usually don't, but after a while, you can get a little tired of one another.
You've said that you want to be married by the time you're 35. Time's ticking.
That sounds like something I would have said when I was 25. I was probably giving myself 10 years. I've always seen myself as having a family. I want kids-maybe three. I do have a girlfriend now.
I didn't know that.
Yeah, probably because she's a normal person. We've been dating for about a year. It's easier not dating a celebrity. With the hours and having to go out of town all the time for long periods, it's hard. And the tabloids are more obsessed with it than ever now. But I understand why actors date other actors. You spend a lot of time together. It's like dating someone from the office.
A friend of yours once said that you're not the type of guy to go to a bar to pick up girls, that girls come up to you. Is that how you met your girlfriend?
I know who said that. I don't know if it's true. I can be kind of shy, and I don't really go out and party, but I don't know. I met her at a party; I approached her. She just had a nice expression on her face, and when I talked to her, I wanted to keep talking to her.
So are your bachelor days of cooking chili out of a can over?
I did go through a period where I would cook everything out of a can. There was this really good chili, and I wanted everyone to try it, like "This came out of a can!!"
Growing up, Owen was your role model. Did that lead to a lot of trouble?
I remember it being like I was the getaway driver. Whatever my brothers did, I wanted to be a part of. They usually let me come along. They didn't bully me much, even though I was the youngest.
I read they made you dress up like a girl in little theater acts.
I don't remember that!
Maybe it's not true. But is it true that you're in talks to play Bobby Ewing in the big-screen remake of Dallas?
It is. I read the script and it's really fun. They're talking to some good people, and it's being directed by Gurinder Chadha, who did Bend It Like Beckham. So I think it could be good. I'm not worried having it be just like the TV show, because I don't think people younger thatn I am watched it when it was on. I watched it, but my guilty pleasure was Miami Vice. I just watched a marathon of that on TV. Now that's a good show!
Guess that's why they made a movie.
