YM, March 1999. Dreams Come Drew by Alyssa Vitrano.

Could it be that our very own Cinderella has found her happy ending? Yes! Her career is soaring, and she's got a prince at her side. Here, Drew Barrymore and Luke Wilson get intimate: "I never believed in love at first sight," says Drew Barrymore on the set of Never Been Kissed, the new flick that she not only stars in but also marks her producing debut. "With Luke, though, I was like, 'He's amazing. How do I pull it together and not act like a nerd?' I could barely make eye contact with him. I was morifiedly embarrassed, if that's even a word!"
"Luke" is actor Luke Wilson, Drew's famous - and famously cute - boyfriend. But that initial mortification was some two-and-a-half years ago, and now Luke's the guy at the head of the everyone-loves-Drew conga line.
"I don't think there's anybody else like her," raves Luke. "She's so upbeat, sometimes I feel like the crank of the neighborhood who won't let you come get your baseball. And then I'll think, She's happy enough for both of us. I like to see the rare occasion when she gets ticked off, provided it's not at me."
The way Drew tells it, though, neither of them spends much time feeling out of sorts. In fact, what Drew loves most about her honey is the way he keeps her smiling. "The most romantic thing is when he makes me laugh. That's why I'm in love with him," she says dreamily. "Luke cares enough to write me notes that make me happy. If I'm in a great mood, I have a companion to run around the world with. If I'm sad, he lifts my spirits by making me find the humor in things. I can't tell you how wonderful that is."
The Cupid of Casting
Before they even met, Drew, 24, and Luke, 27, were literally meant to be a couple. They were cast in two movies together - last fall's Home Fries and an independent film called Best Men - without ever laying eyes on each other. "To a severe degree, we believe in fate and destiny, how one circumstance leads you to a city and a job and a person," Drew says. "I like that we acknowledge that - there's something fun and romantic about it."
The couple's love destiny was almost derailed when they first came face to face. "She was an hour late to our first meeting," Luke recalls. "It made me think, I guess this is how they do it in Hollywood: Say one thing and do another. She gets furious at me for harping on that."
Not to worry. As you'd imagine, Drew and her quirky, bubbly charm quickly won Luke over, and they were on the road to togetherness.
Now, almost three years into their relationship, Drew and Luke say they have definite homebody cravings. Their fave activity is just chilling with each other. "We laugh, crack jokes. We love food. We like to read and take long drives to bookstores," Drew says. "Just all the good normal stuff."
Love in Limelight
This kind of coziness is a major change from Drew's past wild-child escapades. Her former main squeezes include rocker Eric Erlandson and fast-laner Jeremy Thomas, an L.A. bar owner Drew married and divorced in two months flat back in 1994.
"I experimented," Drew says now about those bumpy times. "I was young and it was public. But if it hadn't happened, I don't know if I would have the priorities I do now."
Drew values the more easygoing vibe of her current life. And after spending the last three Thanksgivings with Luke's clan in Texas, she's finally found a place that feels like home. "Most of the people I know have very close-knit families, and I really like that," she says. "I get so excited when I get invited to their homes. I'm like the crazy orphan. If I have a big family someday, I would love to bring people into it, because I know good it feels."
Not that they're planning to start a family together any time soon. But the concept might not be completely far-fetched. When Drew waddled around the Home Fries set in her fake-pregnant-belly costume, Luke says, "A couple of times I'd be reading the newspaper and I'd see her from a distance, in profile. And I'd think, Wow - that's quite a sight."
Having finally landed on the upside of the love see-saw, Drew now knows what she wants. "What we need in this life is our match. Someone who inspires us and infiltrates us with the need to keep on living," she says. "Luke's one of the most extraordinary people I've ever met. More than any other thing, we all just want to laugh - and love."
