I just saw TLA. I thought it was very sweet and very funny! I can't wait for it to come out on DVD!! Bill was great in that movie!! I really felt for his character. I couldn't think of another actor who could have played that part. He was a brilliant choice! Owen was very sweet as Ned. I loved the accent (of course). His character was so very thoughtful, and full of love for everyone. I really got choked up when Ned died. I also knew he would die at some point... but it was still really sad. I've been trying to explain the movie to my dear husband (who didn't "get" it). Lib explained Steve very well, I'm gonna try to explain it to him again. I would like to add that I thought the end scene with the boy on his shoulders symbolized a "triumph". (Heros are carried on shoulders. Ned was Steve's hero. The little boy symbolized Ned.) I DO have a question... what did the reporter's letter say (the one she gave Ned before he got on the helicopter)? Did she tell him that Steve couldn't be his Father? Whatever it was, he didn't want to tell Steve what it said... I couldn't read it fast enough!

The peppermint dental floss was an inspired touch. Who are you, Ned Plimpton? I find myself asking that question. I hope you allow me to find out. Love, Jane I'm not sure if I got some of the words correctly but I think it is mostly correct ;D

Did anyone see Andrew in the movie? I seem to remember that he has had a small part in all the other movies that Wes has directed, but I couldn't spot him in TLA.

Thanks BP! Ozarka, I didn't see Andrew, but maybe he was there and I missed him...? I DID see Noah, though! Did anyone else?

I didn't see Noah, but I did see Robert Wilson and Eric Anderson. But I knew where to look for them. On the second viewing I'll have to look for Noah.
I didn't hear that Andrew was in the film.

Okay - I haven't seen it yet, but I had to be overly curious and see what the spoiler was.
What a bummer!
It's like every Owen movie that comes out, there is a 50/50 chance his character won't be around when the end credits start rolling.
I'm still looking forward to seeing it though!

Oh tequilaroses - Ned's dying scene is brilliant. I know it doesn't sound convincing when I say this because of my love for Owen's sexy dying scenes but I mean it, I am telling you, that is totally totally a work of art. The music!!!!!!!!!! I am repeating what I posted earlier in this thread, but it goes, "Should I try to hide the way I feel inside...my heart for you..." and just when this music starts, Steve takes Ned's dead hand into his hands... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Wes has totally totally done it. Oh my God. Only Wes can do that. I adore that man so much.

I finally got to see TLA. I think it is the best work Wes has done since TRT & BR. The story was so touching and sad. Bill and Owen did a tremendous job. Owen's accent was really good too. The sea creatures were all beautiful. This movie has color everywhere. The only distracting part for me was the yellow submarine. Each time I saw it the Beatles song was in my head. This is probably the only movie where Bill is mostly wearing a speedo and robe. Owen in his speedo was WOW! Steve holding Ned as he was dying was so sad. Overall TLA was very good

I finally got to see this movie last night. I think its Owen's best work yet to date. I think he showed an innocence and vulnerability that we haven't seen since Dignan. He broke my heart several times in this. The scenes between he and Bill were heartwrenching. I also liked his work with Cate. I have to watch the movie a second time to appreciate the entire thing-I couldn't keep my eyes off of Owen and that distracted me from other details. Oh well, it won't be a hardship to see it again.

I loved this movie and I think all of these comments are so insightful. I also thought that Bill said 11 1/2 was his favorite age because thats around the time that Ned wrote him the letter...that being the first time Ned contacted him, since he (Steve) knew about him since he was born. I too figured that the carrying of the child at the end symbolized his change from man-child to father-figure. I think Steve sees 11 1/2 as the perfect age because thats when boys are on that cusp of still being very child like and filled with wonder...to being a teenager and questioning everything. I too missed Bob Wilson...and I was looking for Andrew and Pagoda but didn't see either.
I thought the whole scene of them robbing Jeff Goldblums research lab was hilarious(he was amazing...very Jeff Goldblumey throughout the film) ....and then later when Jeff is on Steves ship and he sees the espresso machine and says 'is this mine?' I just died.
I thought it was important that Anjelica's character told Cate about how Steve couldn't be Ned's father because 'he shoots blanks.' Do you think Steve knew that he couldn't be Ned's dad? Do you think she told Ned?
I have so many thoughts running around in my head that I cannot catch fast enough to type so I'll just end with another thing that struck me as wonderful...I forget his name...but the guy singing in Portuguese was wonderful. What a nice way to segue to other scenes.
Great flick can't wait for the Criterion Collection on this baby!!

I too missed Bob Wilson...and I was looking for Andrew and Pagoda but didn't see either. Mr. Wilson was one of the pallbearers in the Air Kentucky uniforms at Ned's funeral. Another one of them was Wes's little brother Eric. I think it is such an emotional scene they are in that you miss them unless you know where to look beforehand... Kumar Pallana (who played Pagoda) couldn't be in TLA because he was busy filming "The Terminal". And Andrew and Luke were too busy editing TWBS.

I saw TLA today and I have to say that I loved it. Bill was awesome in this movie. He was perfect! Owen and Jeff and Angelica and Willem also did really great!!! There were so many lines and things that really made me laugh out loud! Jeff was sooo funny! His crew was so funny! All those guys that looked like models. And him saying that he was half gay! LOL Willem was so good and so funny! He really cracked me up when Steve and Ned had to go talk after Steve found Ned with Cate's character - and Willem was sitting in the jacuzzi - and Steve and Ned walked through and he (Willem) had a huge smile on his face and he asked, "Are you two fighting?" I agree with Remi about your comment about the boy Steve was carrying on his shoulders and how Ned was his hero. Steve wanted to give up, but Ned pushed him on. Both with his money and with his will. Heathahhh, you make a very good point when you write this: I'm not sure if Steve knew that he couldn't be Ned's dad. Goodness, I have so many thoughts going on in my head wondering about things in the movie, but I don't even know where to begin!! I did see Mr. Wilson right away! The more I see him, the more I see how much Luke looks like him! I absolutely loved all of the colors and the music. I'm just re-reading Page 1 of this thread, and I have to agree with all of what you said Librarian. Especially when you said: Sorry this post makes no sense, but I was trying to address all of your past posts. My point is just that it is wonderful and I cannot wait to get this movie on DVD! Oh, what do you all think that Steve was referring to when they saw the jaguar shark and he cries and says, "I hope he remembers me." ......... I think that's what he said anyway. I'm just wondering what you all though about that scene.

That's funny, Natalie, that you ask what we thought about the part where Steve says 'I wonder if he remembers me'. I just assumed that he was talking about the jaguar shark, because it swam right up to the little submersible and , if I remember right, practically looked in the window. That was my take. Also, I know this was mentioned in another post, but did you all see, at the very end of the movie, when the Belafonte was setting sail, there was a figure up on the top deck, where a blue uniform, and smoking a pipe?!! To my mind, it was Ned, watching over the crew for a few moments, and it just gave me a shiver and it was so comforting, just to see Ned again, even though it was such a faraway shot that you couldn't see his face. I'm sure, IMO, that Wes did that to comfort us, to say, OK, here's Ned one more time, and he is at peace.
