I’m a big fan of both Shanghai Movies and I love to listen to the Directors commentary. I think both Directors did a great job with the films. The thing I liked about both Tom Dey and David Dobkin was that they both sounded like they had an enthusiasm and love for filmmaking (unlike Betty Thomas the Director of I Spy – her I didn’t like).
Anyway, the question I have for you guys is - if you could choose, between the two Directors (Tom Dey or David Dobkin) who would you pick to Direct the next Shanghai movie?

I liked Noon better than Knights but I don't know if that was because of the directing. I get the feeling from interviews that the vibe on the set for both movies was good. I just found some of the jokes in knights a bit old, I really enjoyed the film though, but the bad teeth and it always rains jokes were old. I also preferred the fight scenes in Noon, I like the one in the bar with the zz top music... le grange and I love it when Owen is like watching Jackie demolish everyone and going "yes, yes" and then realises Jackie is gonna start in on him and starts saying "no no". In Knights, Owen isn't so involved in the "fight action" scenes and I really thought that was a shame, I thought he was a nice counterbalance to the standard fight scene. I also love the part of Noon which Owen totally improvised, where he gives jackie lessons in how to shoot and draw and be a cowboy but he is soo bad at it. That scene slays me every time So ummm what the hell am I going on and on about - oh yeah I think either of them would do a fine job on Dawn. I think who the writers will be and what good stuff Owen can contribute will be the deciding factor in whether it is good as the others. But please please put Owen back into the centre of the action scenes ;D

Hmm.. this is a hard one. Especially as I have seen Shanghai Noon a million times and Shanghai Knights only twice. I'd have to say that they are both very well done and both are very visually pleasing with good cinematography. I would need to watch SK a few more times just to be sure (it's hard, but someone's gotta do it ) but I think the two directors are on a par with each other. SN willl always be more effective though, I think, as it was the first and hence more original. It is interesting to note that in SK Dave Dobkin did an almost flawless job of copying the look and feel of Tom Dey's SN. Which begs the question, why did they not just use Tom Dey again? I also love director's commentary, MAC. I'd have to get my hands on SK DVD to form a better opinion. After listening to the SN commentary I felt a great deal of rapore and respect for Tom Dey. He seemed intelligent, to have got on with Owen well and to really have a passion and understanding for the film. I would have liked to see him do SK, but at the same time, I do not think SK suffered by being directed by someone else. At the end of the day, their styles are quite similar.

LegallyLukes, I have watched Shanghai Knights more then twice and according to David Dobkin's commentary the reason Tom Dey didn't direct the second movie was because he had other commitments. Again, what I liked about both Directors was that they both sounded like they really loved filmmaking. They both acknowledged that they thought the script was kind of silly, and made an effort make the movies as real and entertaining as possible. Maybe another reason I liked the two Directors was because they seemed to have a lot of respect for Owen talents as an actor and writer.

I know Jackie Chan has said in a recent interview on G4 that he will do Rush Hour 3 and then go back to Hong Kong to make a movie and then do Shanghai Dawn so he expects this to happen late 2004. So in another few months I guess we will know who the director will be
