'Texas Women Photographers' exhibit to open tomorrow at The Grace

Photographers working in genres from abstract to documentary share their perspectives of the world in an exhibit that opens Saturday at The Grace Museum.
"Inside/Outside: Texas Women Photographers" is curated by Anne Wilkes Tucker, curator of photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Clint Willour, executive director/curator of the Galveston Arts Center.
The exhibit, the first to open at The Grace this year, collects 50 pieces by 10 female Texans. Most live in southeast Texas.
The photographers represent a variety of ages, ethnic backgrounds and professional experience. However, each has a specific style reflected in her work, and each has shown photographs in major cities.
Several photographers try to preserve memories, museum Curator of Education Kathryn Best said. Laura Pickett Calfee of Driftwood photographs objects that have belonged to the same family for generations. Houston native Ann Stautberg shoots black-and-white photographs, and then hand-colors objects in the photo from memory.
Other photographers are more interested in documenting life around the world. Misty Keasler of Richardson photographed European orphans. Sharon Seligman of Spicewood spent several years with Mexican families who sell animals on roadsides.
Laura Wilson photographed Montana residents called Hutterites, who share their collective income and property.
The exhibit also includes abstracts, landscapes and portraits.
Although none of the photographers lives near the Big Country, at least one photographer might be familiar to area residents.
Wilson — mother of actors Luke Wilson, "Old School" and Owen Wilson, "Shanghai Noon" — shot photographs for the book "Watt Matthews of Lambshead," about the notable Shackelford County cattleman.
Last fall, the Old Jail Art Center in Albany exhibited photos Wilson shot at six-man football games in the Big Country and elsewhere.
