As he denies a romance with co-star Kate Hudson, Owen Wilson, the You Me and Dupree star admits he envies famous friends who've found love
The question on everyone’s lips in Hollywood is “did they or didn’t they? As in Did Owen Wilson and Kate Hudson share more kisses of the screen of their new movie You Me and Dupree, then the single one they performed on camera? And if they did, did it contribute to the end of Kate’s marriage to The Black Crowes’ frontman Chris Robinson, a split which was announced earlier this month.
According to Owen’s spokesperson, rumours of a romance between him and Goldie Hawn’s daughter are “all untrue”. However, Kate’s failure to appear alongside her co-star and the London premiere of You Me and Dupree last week only fuelled the gossip-as did reported sightings of the pair out with friends in various LA hotspots.
One thing that’s not a mystery, however, is how romantic rumours get started around Owen Wilson. A handsome 37 Year Old bachelor with a mop of blond hair and a positive bucketful of laid-back Texan charm, he is a natural romantic hero- and a bit of a lady’s man at heart, as he admits when we meet up with him in Santa Monica
“What do I do to be romantic?” he ponders. “Well sending flowers is a good one. Or going for walks on the beach. Holding hands is good, too, although I always think it’s kinda corny to be walking around holding hands, it feels like you are shouting, ‘Hey- we’re a couple’ But girls like it, so I do. I guess that’s a lot of romance is-doing stuff that you’re not into doing but you do it anyway.”
The talented actor, who has not only starred in such comic hits as Meet the Parents and Starsky and Hutch but also co-wrote the cult classics Rushmore and The Royal Tenebaumns, admits that he is a bit of a tree spirit when it comes to love. His only high profile relationship to date has been an affair from 1998 to 2000 with singer Sheryl Crow- and although Owen confesses that “there have been girls I have been crazy about” Its seems that, so far, a lifetime love has passed him by. And the star doesn’t entirely blame his previous girlfriends for the break-ups.
“I had this one girlfriend that I would have to go antique shopping with on the weekend, and it just seemed like the worst time of torture because I have no interest in going to flea markets” he explains. “That relationship didn’t work out. But it was my fault too, because I know she felt that way when I watched a football game on TV, it wasn’t enough for me to watch the game- I had to watch all the interviews. Then I had to watch the highlights, then I would sometimes watch the re-broadcast at 1am. And you know, she just couldn’t understand that.”
The middle of three sons of an ad executive father and his photographer wife, Owen grew up in a creative atmosphere (brothers Andrew and Luke are also actors), which, he says, has given him license to be the easy-going guy he is today. And nowhere can that be seen better then in his current role, as Randy Dupree, the amiable bachelor friend of a newlywed suburban couple who comes to stay….and stay….and stay. Kate Hudson plays the put-upon bride, while Matt Dillon is the harassed husband.
“The writer of the film, Mike LeSieur, came to me and pitched the idea.” Says Owen, “and I just thought it sounded really funny because everyone can relate to either having a Dupree in their life, or having felt like a Dupree, where they’ve been like the third wheel. I know I’ve been on both sides of it. The way I figured it in the film, Dupree was kind of like a dog you bring home from the pound. I wanted my character of Dupree to be lovable He’s not just this jaded cynical slacker who turns up on the doorstep with nothing. Okay, he doesn’t have a job…….but he really does have great enthusiasm for life!”
Ask him about any Duprees in his own life and he doesn’t have to think for more then a second to come up with an answer. “That would be my brother Luke.” He says firmly about his famous sibling, whose most recent starring role was in My Super Ex-Girlfriend alongside Uma Thurman. “He live with me for about a year, even though he had his own house less then a mile away. And when he first came to stay, for the first couple of months while his house was being worked on, it was like ‘Wow, it’s great to have my brother with me, we’re having a lot of laughs!’ But, you know, Luke’s the baby of the family; he likes being taken care of. When he was living with me, there was this housekeeper, there was always food in the refrigerator, and I guess it sort of seemed to him like he was back home in Dallas again. After about six months, I started to drop hints; ‘How’s the new house coming on? Can I have my assistant help you move?’ Then after a year, I said ‘Luke, you have to go,’ And you’ve got to remember I wasn’t kicking him out to live on the street or anything, he had a beautiful house of his own to live in just 20 blocks away!”
On the other hand, he admits that in his time, he’s been something of a Dupree himself. “When I went to Hawaii to visit my friend Woody Harrelson and his family I was only supposed to stay four days, but I had such a good time I ended up staying four weeks. And even his wife, who is so sweet and who has such a lot of patience, towards the end of my stay was saying things like ‘Uh, do you need a ride to the airport…….today?’ To this day, Woody accuses me of having stolen a pair of slippers when I left. But what he doesn’t understand is that I also have a pair of slippers that are just like his……..although I do seem to have two pairs of those same slippers now, so maybe somehow a pair did end up in my bag and the end!”
He admits that he enjoys the company of married couples, and says if there is one person in the world he envies it’s comedian Ben Stiller, he’s good friend and frequent co-star (Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, Starsky and Hutch, Zoolander, to name but a few) Ben is happily married to actress Christine Taylor, and the couple have a young daughter and baby son. “Ben has a very close family,” Owen says, sounding suddenly wistful. “It’s a real family unit and it does seem nice when I go visit him. I mean, I have family members staying with me sometimes, but it’s never like someone I really want to go home to see! When I work with Ben and we’re done working, he always wants to get home as quickly as possible. Me, I just try to stay out as long as I can! So, yeah, I do think that what Ben has, it would be nice, at some point, to get something like that.”
Whether Kate Hudson will be that woman he finds that hoped-for happiness and security with remains to be seen
