He was so good in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, two of my fave films when I was younger and they still are now.

Yes, Henry Gibson died at his home in Malibu at age 73 after a brief battle with cancer. Henry Gibson was famous for reciting off-beat poetry on the popular variety/comedy show of the 1960's and early 1970's, "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" (which also launched the careers of Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin, and Ruth Buzzi). Usually, Mr Gibson was holding a flower during his recitations.
But most here will remember Henry Gibson as the befuddled priest in Wedding Crashers. He also was the menacing neighbor of Tom Hanks in the comedy The Burbs.
Also Mary Travers has died today in Connecticut at age 72 after a long battle with leukemia. She was 1/3 of the hugely popular 1960's folk-singing trio of Peter, Paul and Mary. They had a string of hits in the 60's including "Puff [The Magic Dragon]," "Where Have All The Flowers Gone," "Leaving On A Jet Plane," "Lemon Tree," and Bob Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind." They became activists, participating in anti-war protests and marching with Dr. Martin Luther King. Peter, Paul and Mary remained favorite concert curcuit performers throughout the 80's and 90's.
RIP Patrick, Henry, and Mary.

Tina, thanks so much for posting that beautiful tribute to Mary Travers. I was a huge fan of PP&M (still am!), and I had several of their LP's. I used to go to PP&M concerts whenever they were around, and I understand they were still performing up until this year.

Uk singer and member of Boyzone Stephen Gately has died suddenly in his sleep on holiday in Majorca. No other news is known at this time. Was a nice, talented person and still young.

What a shock this news was this morning and I'm a stranger to Stephen, imagine how his family and close friends must feel. So many deaths recently of celebs below average death age - 70ish - that it makes me feel we should live our lives as fully as we can.

My fave comedian from my childhood has died:
DETROIT - Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian whose anything-for-a-chuckle career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances across a half-century of laughs, has died. He was 83. Sales died at Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher.
At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and '60s, Sales was one of the best-known faces in the nation, Usher said. At the same time, Sales retained an openness to fans that turned every restaurant meal into an endless autograph-signing session, Usher said.
Sales began his TV career in Cincinnati and Cleveland, then moved to Detroit, where he drew a large audience on WXYZ-TV. He moved to Los Angeles in 1961.
The comic's pie-throwing schtick became his trademark, and celebrities lined up to take one on the chin alongside Sales. During the early 1960s, stars such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Shirley MacLaine received their just desserts side-by-side with the comedian on his television show.
Sales was born Milton Supman on Jan. 8, 1926, in Franklinton, N.C., where his was the only Jewish family in town.
After moving to Los Angeles, he eventually became a fill-in host on "The Tonight Show."
Sales remained a familiar television face, first as a regular from 1968-75 on the game show "What's My Line?" and later appearing on everything from "The Mike Douglas Show" to "The Love Boat." He played himself in the 1998 movie "Holy Man," which starred Eddie Murphy.
He joined WNBC-AM as a disc jockey in 1985, a stint best remembered because Sales filled the hours between shock jocks Don Imus and Howard Stern.
Sales is survived by his wife, Trudy, and two sons, Hunt and Tony, a pair of musicians who backed David Bowie in the band Tin Machine.

Aw, thank you, SP. Soupy was so funny, always made me laugh. His humor was zany, uniquely his own, and attracted both children and adults.
I didn't know he was in "Holy Man" until I read the article so now I must rent the dvd.

I think I remember Soupy on the Sha Na Na show back in the late 70's, but I could be wrong.

Yes, I just noticed the announcement when I signed onto my internet homepage just now. Brittany was so cute in Clueless, and I'd heard her interviewed live on one of the local morning radio shows a few years ago.
The preliminary cause of death is reported as 'cardiac arrest' but, of course, what's unknown is the cause of the arrest. Unfortunately, she has an alleged history of drug use. Drug use can cause cardiac arrest, even in a 32-year-old with no known history of cardiac disease. Other sources are saying she was diabetic which, if true, can also cause death if glucose/insulin status gets out-of-control. Whatever, death is so very sad and shocking in such a young person.

I really didn't know anything about her, I don't think I've seen any of her movies but its still sad, of course. I didn't realise she might have been taking drugs, thats a shame... it can seem like too many people in showbusiness seem to end up with addictions of some sort (drugs or drink or whatever), very sad...
