That is a great idea. I saw lots of books among the tons of donations at yesterday's collection station.
These folks need something to entertain themselves from time to time - just like the rest of us. And what a great way to provide them a few minutes of escape from all their problems than to give them a great book to lose themselves in.

It seems we can, Jenny although the shipping may be expensive if you are sending many by airmail. I guess you can use the surface mail if you are sending many. £9.41 for 2kg for example ( click here to look up prices!).

Jenny and BP,
Maybe there's a UK agency where you could drop the books off and they'll send them for you.
I'm e-mailing a representative from the Romance Writers of America organization to see if she has any ideas.
Thanks!

I haven't heard back from the Romance Writers of America yet, but I was thinking that you might be able to check with the Red Cross nearest to you. Here's a link to the Red Cross in the UK. You can enter your postal code to find the office closest to you. www.redcross.org.uk/

Thank you so much for the idea and the link Margot! I phoned them and they didn't have any address to send books to in the UK. The lady said it was because the cost of shipping would most likely be more than what the books are worth and therefore it is more effective to just donate the money than send the books if anyone in the UK etc. would like to help. It makes sense. I think T-Gal said the same thing on another thread about goods in general. I have a few light children's books which may not cost much to send to the US address. I will check the shipping price and if it seems worth sending them from here, then I will. If not I will just donate the money. Thanks again Margot

Jenny and BP,
It's sweet of you to want to be involved, but what the Red Cross told Bunny is true. Your resources will go farther if you make a monetary donation. However, don't let that stop you from sending books if that's what you feel called to do.
Because I'm only about a six-hour drive from the hurricane devastation, my city is brimming with trucks heading south with aid, so I can avoid the postage fees. For those who don't have access to aid vehicles, may I suggest a cooperative effort with friends from work, school, or church? Then you can at least share the postage costs.

OSG, where are you moving to? Why are you moving? Nosy, aren't I? Best wishes for a smooth move.
Books are a good idea and separate from what I heard this morning on the radio. That being that shelters are starting to become inundated with clothing and other goods. Where some shelters are overhwelmed by generous donations of one thing, they are short on other things.
Every charity is beginning to request monetary donations only and no more goods. Monetary donations require no packing/unpacking, no trucking, no sorting, no warehousing, and very little personnel. And every shelter knows exactly what it needs too.
Therefore, it's best for all us of (not just overseas generous people) to move to giving cash donations only.
But send the books!

tg, wish I had an exciting story but...the owner of the house I am renting is selling so I am moving a whopping 3 miles. Don't blame them for selling the market in Atl is getting insane, just since I have been renting here houses in this nhood have gone up at least 50/60K. The good news is I have lots of things to donate. Thanks for the good wishes, have had bad moves before.

The call for books was heard and answered. Shelters now have more books than they need. There's still a use for the books you were going to donate, though. After the libraries in Katrina's path clean up (rebuilid, in some cases) and re-open, they will need to fill their shelves.
