My only advice to people travelling is carry a handbag with a secure zip! I was in Sydney a week ago (the reason I have not been around here much lately) and I got robbed in broad daylight in the Pitt Street Mall
Not the best way to start off a holiday. I lost my wallet, all my money, bankcards, ID, etc AND my passport which is devilishly expensive to replace in a foreign country
I've never felt so angry or disturbed in my life. The fact that someone is running around with my ID is just scary. I've no idea what they intend to do with it, probably sell it on the black market
It was a busy lunch hour and I was in a food court and people were bumping into me from every side. I felt someone tug on my bag, and silly, naive me just thought someone had brushed by too close. This was unfortunately NOT the case. When I went to find my wallet to pay for something it was gone, and I realised what happened. I was carrying a bag without a zip and they just reached in and took it .
Lukcily my insurance should cover all my losses and I was with my mum, so I had help and someone to cover me for money. I feel so stupid though, because it would never have occurred to me that someone should try to rob me. I mean, there are 4 million people in the city of Sydney, why pick me? I grieve for my lost innocence *sob* These pick-pocketers are so good you never realise they're doing it until too late, so keep an eye open and on your valuables.
It also disturbs me to realise they must have been watching me for a while as I had taken out my wallet ealier to pay for something and placed it back on top of everything else. I am ashamed to say I probably presented a very easy target. In my defence, I come from New Zealand, where this kind of thing is not common at all (I've never heard of anyone being robbed on the street in Wellington). When I was at the police station in Sydney another girl came in to complain of the same thing, it's rampant there.
Anyways, my intent in telling you this is not to put a dampner on proceedings, believe me!!! Rather I endevour to save you from all the heartache and hassle that I went through recently. I'm sure you won't be at any risk at all if you keep your things secure.
I hope you have a better holiday than I did! (To top it all off it rained practically the whole time and my mum got the flu... Not my week, huh? )
Also, it's essential that I note how jealous I am of you getting to go to LA. I am MUCHO jealous, you lucky people! I can't wait to travel more ;D
