On 4-01-04 I wrote: Bad Seed- Bad Title and Bad story. Luke, however was a glowing diamond in a tarnished setting. He looks great and emotes anger, angst, anguish, agitation, aggravation, anxiety, and agony. Is that enough of an A-list to promote this guy into his current status as an actor? I think so. He looks like the only one who went to acting class and stayed awake during the final. Got an A in the class too! That long distance running style is also in evidence and keeps him miles ahead of the critics.
I'm always ten steps ahead of the plot in a sleeper thriller, but by the time the ending rolled around with this one, even my two limp alternate theories would have given it box office survival for at least another week or so. Yowser! When Luke hits the bathroom floor with the gun to his head...the audience is about ready to join him there and arm wrestle for weapon possession. Before we start shooting that pistol- it's worth a second watch just to absorb the man and cheer on -what we know will be his future success and personal triumphs....
One year later- I buy the DVD and finally have a chance to listen to the commentary and WOW- It is sensational! For those who have not had the chance, it is worth listening to and enjoying Luke's take on "his director" and his comments on the filming experience. It is remarkable and exciting to note that in just a very few years- LUKE TOO will be having this directorial experience with the Wendell Baker Story. Some comments:
-The scene where he is at the funeral of his wife- Luke reveals that the extras at the funeral "were dancers at the club the crew went to the night before..."
-Luke is drinking a Coke in one scene and reveals that he hadn't had a Coke since he was 10 years old...
-When Andrew was hired the director told him he had to shave. "this ain't Miami Vice" Andrew was wearing a pink tee shirt and a white jacket...
-Luke, Andrew and Dennis Farrina went out to play golf one day of the shoot. Farrina quit when it started raining on the 12th hole...
-Luke is showering in a scene and the hotel dive where they were filming was sooo bad that he stood in the grimy shower in a trash bag tied at his knees...
-Luke indicates that this was a very damp moist shoot (both Lib and Gage have commented before). The director wanted it raining throughout and Luke spent time in real rain, fake rain, showers, crying in continuous grief scenes and as he says: the production assistant was continually spraying him down with a sprayer. WHEE...WHEE...WHEE... Trust me it's funnier when Luke says it!!...
-The director Bokenkamp comments that he originally wanted Luke for the part when he saw his overt display of manners with each interview granted on a press day(during Home Fires). Luke stood and greeted each interviewer and shook each one's hand. It impressed Bokenkamp to the degree that he felt comfortable to ask Luke to be in his picture...
Bad Seed was a Bad Title for a Dark, Damp movie... BUT as usual Luke looks good totally wet and ready for action! HT ;D
