I decided to make a Rushmore thread, because I didn't see anything about the poor thing!
I've never seen this movie, is it good?
From all the trailers and everything else I've seen, it looks fantastic. I like Jason Swarchtzman, and of course Bill Murray and Wes Anderson, (and Owen). And it looks downright funny.

Yes, Neds, Rushmore is very good. Not just for Anderson-Wilson fans either; it was critically acclaimed.

I just saw Rushmore last night, I hadn't seen it before and had been working my way through all of Wes' movies over the last couple of months or so... you can get the basic one disk DVD really cheap online which is good lol lots of people seem to be selling it, I got it for about £3 on Ebay including P&P. Actually its one of my favourite Wes movies now, 2nd to Life Aquatic which is my favourite I think (Bottle Rocket 3rd & Royal Tenenbaums 4th im afraid!). It was funny, I was thinking about a boy I remember who was at school when I was at school, Max somewhat reminded me of... he had trouble with schoolwork too, was often hanging around learning support services where I used to go sometimes but he was pretty clever and seen as quite a sort of 'mis fit' character too... mind you I was kind of similar too though I was never involved in so many clubs or societies, just one; the 'Green Team' an environmental awareness group ran by a Geography teacher lol... Thinking to the start of the movie, I kind of laughed at the dream about solving the mathematic problem; I've always been particularly bad at math (or as we call it, MathS lol) and nearly always need to have a calculator with me to do any sums lol I'd imagine it would feel pretty cool if I were back in a math(s) class now and could answer a complicated equation or something like that *sigh* I wish lol I even used to go to an after school class that sued this Japanese technique to help teach math(s) patterns to kids, that kind of guaranteed that any child that did the programme, would leave being able to remember times tables and do sums quicker and better... but I ended up going to classes for that aged about 14-16, much older than the other kids, so that was always an embarrassment, I hate math(s)! I did have a crush on the gym teacher at one point too lol he was really young though and used to ask me how I was and stuff unlike alot of other people who didn't bother... and when no-one wanted to pair up with me in gym as I wasn't much good at sports, I'd end up being paired with him as he was the teacher... he was cute lol! used to talk to me in the corridor and stuff *shrug* but yeah anyway *ahem* I enjoyed the movie; I though Schwartzman and Murray's performances were particularly good. It was funny seeing a Scottish character there lol sounds like one of the students at the college I work at; they swear like troopers! #rolleyes# we're not all so bad though (lol). Does it sound too awful if I say that I lol'd when Max retaliated on Mr. Blume after he took his bike? heh (trying to to post exact spoilers incase Neds still hasn't seen it) that says somethng not so good about my sense of humour I guess but at least no-one actually got hurt! and it was nice seeing Luke's cameo too... I typed out a review on the movie & the DVD again on Ciao! like I've reviewed all the other Wes and Owen movies ive seen but Ciao is down at the moment... but if anyone wants a look when the sites back up, its here:- dvd.ciao.co.uk/Rushmore_DVD__Review_5714347I find it difficult at times to think how to explain or describe accurately Wes' movies in reviews. Like I try and explain the type of comedy used and how it works with character development and stuff, I often think the reviews are a bit clunky but I still tend to get nice comments about them so I guess their not that bad *shrug* Oh one thing I was a little confused about was with the play towards the end, the war one, I thought the secret plan was to actually blow the place up lol rather than just the special effects on stage, hence getting was it Dirk(?) to move the dynamite etc... but that sort of never happened... edit:- I just read that Owen is credited as Edward Appleby in the movie, though he's not shown in it at all. Thats kinda random...

I forgot to look up the info. before I watched the movie last night so I didn't spot that... also I think I read that a favourite book or something was put in one of the classroom scenes... I should have looked all that up before watching it... Its a good movie

Hi there! It's so great to see this thread popping up! It is true that Owen is Edward Appleby - he is in pictures on the wall in Edward's old bedroom where Miss Cross is living. Do you remember seeing pictures taken by Laura Wilson of Owen when he was little? There's one with him standing on the back of a horse like a Hutterite (a group which Laura Wilson did a series of photographs on and later a book.) That picture of Owen standing on the horse is up on the wall in those bedroom scenes, when Max comes in the window saying he was hit by a car. I know that the photos are copyrighted, and Laura has requested that they not be reposted anywhere, but the cover of her book bears some resemblance to the picture of Owen: Also, Laura had one of herself on horseback which was reprinted in a magazine, and which she allowed another fan forum to keep up: Also, Owen is present in the brief scene at the beginning with Max and the Yankee Racers on their Go-Carts in a yellow sweater with his glasses on. Here's a picture of him and Wes when it was filmed: That's always been one of my favorite pictures of Owen and Wes.

Thanks for the info. and picture Sugar I didn't know about those photos, so I didn't know what to look out for, ill have to watch out for that next time I put the DVD on. Thats a good photo of Owen & Wes, I used to love go karting as a kid, at the childrens theme parks I used to go to I always went on the karting rides lol at Legoland in Denmark if you follow the route in a go kart like thing like those, you get awarded a fake driving license lol I did that once when I went to Denmark on a school trip one time... they are good fun! Thats really clever the photos of the horses, I wouldn't be able to do that, you'd need very good balance for that position I think!

I haven't seen all of the movies on the 100 list so I can't comment legitimately. But I am surprised by some of the choices.
Re: SugarMagnolia's earlier posting, the one with several photos. I don't recall a photo of young Owen standing on a horse. I do recall a photo of young Owen & Andrew on a pony with baby Luke (in diapers) standing on the ground next to the pony. Oh, please don't tell me I've missed an Owen photo!!
SugarMagnolia also mentions Owen "with his glasses on" as if Owen normally wears glasses. I didn't know that. I thought maybe the glasses in the go-kart photo with Wes were just "props" for the photo. That photo and a scene from Royal Tenenbaums with Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) are the only two times I've seen glasses on Owen.
Seems to me that if Owen wears glasses that he'd have been "caught" with them on at other times, considering the number of paps he attracts. Just a thought but, of course, I could be wrong!
P.S., I think Owen looks just as hot & cute with glasses as without them.

Hi Texasgal! There's another photo I can think of with Owen wearing glasses - one where he was at a film premiere, wearing a blue bucket hat and glasses (looking a lot like Dudley Heinsbergen, actually.)
The pictures with Owen standing on a horse are actually a lot like the one of Laura Wilson standing on a horse. In Laura's she's holding the horse's reins, in Owen's he isn't. Owen kind of has his arms up, Laura has one hand on the reins and one hand on her hip.
The best place to look for Owen on the horse is in Rushmore, look over Miss Cross' head when she's in Edward's bedroom with Max. Owen is over her shoulder, in a picture of a boy standing on a horse - that's Owen. The pictures of him as a boy were used to show Edward as a boy. (The other picture you mentioned of Andrew and Owen on horseback was done when they were a bit younger, and they were wearing fewer clothes. Owen's wearing more clothes in the one where he is standing on horseback, I think he's wearing a dark color shirt and long pants.)

Thanks Natalie! I'm disappointed that EW didn't mention that Owen co-wrote the movie with Wes. #dontknow# (transcribed from my copy)
