I hope nobody minds me starting this, I'm just curious really whether my tastes overlap with any of you! I'm also always on the look out for people who make good series and movies, finding another good actor or actress who I like often opens up a whole new stream of great movies to watch. Plus of course I have an ulterior motive in introducing my favourite actors to potential new fans ;D well you never know! I'm wondering what other actors (or indeed actresses!) you like, either for talent, looks, personality, or a combination of the above. (I'm taking it as read that most fans of one Wilson brother tend to end up with a soft spot for the other two, so I'm not going to mention them myself, but don't let that stop you ) It's a subject I could waffle on about at length, so I'm going to confine myself to two of my absolute favourite actors, both Brits. David Tennant: c2.api.ning.com/files/mBHuesX7AD760apB50ifamYfgJh1Rn34DiGvQ3fLJfzUQpss0MLwBSwJATXvZNKAu6X5T8SEz99vp3cgPYzRbK8F4yUy1LjS/DavidTennant.jpgBest known as the tenth Doctor in BBC's Doctor Who, but also has many stage and screen credits to his name. Nice eyes, cute smile, very talented indeed, -worthy natural accent He's been described as odd or even rodent looking, and in some ways I can't deny it, but I still find him utterly attractive. I've never seen him in anything where I haven't been impressed by his work, and he's done stuff from very intense to light and funny and everything in between - sometimes in the same programme when necessary. He has an incredible facility with accents (English ones at least!), I saw him in a couple of things before seeing him interviewed as himself, and I had no idea he was Scottish - this sums up my reaction well: John Simm: john-simm.org/gallery/albums/Photoshoots/008/s9_019.jpgAlso had a role in Doctor who, as the Master, but has been in lots of other things; has a reputation for being very picky about what he does which means his back catalogue has some absolute gems despite his not being as prolific as some other actors. John's kind of ordinary looking, if I try to be objective about it, but he has extraordinary charisma and watchability on screen. All of his characters seem very real even when they've time traveled due to a coma(!) or are renegade Time Lords(!) etc. I've come to the conclusion that this is the checklist of things which I like in actors, or at least these are the only things I can work out that really link my favourites, beyond the fact that I think they are talented at what they do. 1) Can make me laugh AND can make me cry - can be both intense and funny, and various degrees in between. 2) Nice eyes (crinkly edges being an optional but appreciated extra! ;D), nice smile. 3) Nice jawbone/ear/neck area. Yes, I'm weird. LOL. 4) Interesting, appealing accent. Anyway I'm curious (nosy!) to know who your other favourites are, and why (if you can work it out).

I've mentioned him before as being my equal favourite with the Wilsons - Ben Stiller.

Floot - total YES on David. I am so sad he is not playing the Doctor anymore. He was also great in Blackpool and Secret Smile. So handsome.

Floot, nice topic for a new conversation. Always nice to get new conversations started here. Btw, "nice jawbone/ear/neck area. Yes, I'm weird." NO!! I don't think that's weird at all! Some caveats: My list includes Luke and Andrew and Ben Stiller. I'm limiting my list to living actors. My list is in no particular order. Sorry my list is terribly all-American (except for Michelle, Jackie, and Hugh) I'm just most familiar with Americans. The men: Kurt Russell Bill Pullman Bill Paxton Jackie Chan Dennis Hopper (who was just diagnosed with prostatic cancer) Clint Eastwood Harrison Ford Tom Hanks Bruce Campbell Jeff & Beau Bridges Mark Harmon Hugh Laurie James Garner William Katt William Hurt Eddie Murphy Sam Elliott Samuel Jackson Yes to Jack Nicholson too The women: Reese Witherspoon Meg Ryan Camryn Manheim Sandra Bullock Jennifer Aniston Shirley MacLaine Michelle Yeoh Cicely Tyson (sad we never see her anymore - retired?) Sally Field Pam Grier Sissy Spacek (again, sad we never see her anymore - retired?)

Good actor choices, Rach. I agree about Seth Rogan. He's kind of disgusting but yeah, he does have something too. Dr. Who is seen in America but only in certain markets. It isn't shown in San Antonio, that much I know. But when I was still living in Michigan, it was seen from a Detroit station. That station might have been the local PBS station or Channel 56, a local VHS station. Or maybe it was broadcast on Channel 9, the station across the River in Windsor, Ontario. Edited to add: I should have added Michael York and Michael Caine to my list of fave actors. Probably Michael Redgrave too. Oh....and Vanessa Redgrave. Sheesh! Now all kinds of names are coming to mind! #duh# Edited to add: To the best of my knowledge, Dr. Who has not been remade into an American version.

Doctor Who airs on PBS and BBC America. I don't really have specific actors I am crazy about. I usually fall in love with a movie and love the actor in that role. A good example would be Brad Pitt. I am not a fan whatsoever, but I really loved Fight Club and his role in that. I also seem to obsess over someone for awhile, then want to know everything about them until I finally become sick of them. My current obsession is the photographer Lee Miller. I am reading two biography's on her and just bought a book of her photographs. She started as a model and ended up a photojournalist covering WWII. There is a famous photo of her right after the war ended taking a bath in Hitlers bathtub She was also involved with artist Man Ray who took one of my favorite photographs ever

I'm pretty sure the PBS affiliate in San Antonio does not carry Doctor Who but, for the heck of it, I'll check it out. I just don't recall ever noticing it in the local TV Guide. I never watched Dr Who on a regular basis myself; I only know about it through my Canadian g/f who was and is crazy about it.
Tinalouise, I understand what you mean about becoming obsessed with an actor for just a particular part in a particular film. For me, one example would be Helen Mirren as Ayn Rand in The Passion Of Ayn Rand. ('Course, I might as well add Helen in my list; she's great in everything she does!)
I've never heard of Lee Miller nor Man Ray nor anyone being photographed in Hitler's bathtub! Thanks for informing me of all this.
The only famous female photojournalist I know of from that time period is Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) who was married to famous novelist Erskine Caldwell. Her photos (along with those of Dorothea Lange) chronicled the Dust Bowl of the 1930's. Margaret also photographed pre-WWII Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia, WWII, and the partition of India-Pakistan. Farrah Fawcett portrayed Margaret in a made-for-TV-movie Double Exposure: The Margaret Bourke-White Story, and Candice Bergen portrayed Margaret in the 1982 film Gandhi.
Thanks for introducing me to this other famous woman photographer.
I get obsessed with famous women in history too; glad to see I'm not the only one.
Rach, those are all fine actors you've added. I was trying to limit my list to living actors; to include deceased ones would make the list endlessly long. ;D

I'm glad I started this thread, it's been interesting to read who everyone likes - strangely, almost all the names mentioned I either also love or I have not even heard of - very few in between So that gives me a fair few people to have a look for on lovefilm - yay! I realised I should also add point 5 - gotta love a guy who's palpably mischievous I just realised that I messed up a url code in my original post so it was a mishmash of what I wrote about David Tennant and what I wrote about John Simm, which made my post really confusing and weird. I've fixed it now, it may make more sense (I make no promises!) Hopefully it now has some vague chance of introducing the lovely John Simm to people properly rather than the random unrelated paragraph that didn't follow on right. (funny the lack of a US Doctor Who was mentioned - John, who had a role in DW, has a knack of being in really good things which get remade rather than just exported to the US! I can't imagine a US Doctor Who - the whole rickety tardis which doesn't always work etc seems quintessentially British to me, I find myself imagining that an American Doctor would probably have a cooler and more reliable spaceship ... I am not a "proper" DW fan like some people are, I never even enjoyed it as a child, but the new series are a lot of fun and anything with the lovely David in is a plus ) Floot - total YES on David. I am so sad he is not playing the Doctor anymore. He was also great in Blackpool and Secret Smile. So handsome. I still haven't seen Secret Smile, though I've seen bits from it - I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to films, I probably wouldn't even think of watching it if it didn't have David in it If you can find Recovery on youtube it's really worth watching - so moving - and also highly recommend Takin' Over the Asylum. But yeah. Love David. He always comes across as such a nice bloke too - I have it on good authority (one of my best friends has an uncle who works on Doctor Who and related progs) that he is a joy to work with. Btw, "nice jawbone/ear/neck area. Yes, I'm weird." NO!! I don't think that's weird at all! Oh good ;D always nice to know someone else knows what I'm on about! Michelle Yeoh is just 100% amazingly great isn't she? I have not seen her in loads and loads of stuff but she's always utterly mesmerising and has such a wonderful onscreen presence. Glad also to see some love for Hugh Laurie. I am guessing, but may be wrong? that he's best known in the US for House? It is SO weird watching that for me. Hugh with an American accent just does strange things to my brain Loads of "yeses" especially from your list, Tex - I'll have to check out the ones I don't know, as I the ones I do know from your list are mostly people I really like! I'm resisting the temptation to list loads more names of my own - I made myself keep it to two in that first post, and I know if I start listing more I'll be here forever... I don't really have specific actors I am crazy about. I usually fall in love with a movie and love the actor in that role. A good example would be Brad Pitt. I am not a fan whatsoever, but I really loved Fight Club and his role in that. Yeah, that makes sense. I tend to do the same, in that I find someone new who I really like in a role, then watch everything they have done, which can take the shine off. There are just a few actors and actresses I've admired for ages who I don't seem to get sick of, and then those are the ones I count myself as being more or less a "real" fan of! Those photos are amazing, tinalouise! This is great - new actors to check out and interesting photographers to look up too... Rach - Ralph Fiennes is one of those actors I haven't seen a lot of his stuff, he does a lot of things I wouldn't watch, but the things I have seen him in he's been brilliant.

Michelle Yeoh is awesome, in the truest sense of the word. When she was filming Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, they tried to get stand-ins to do some of her stunts and just couldn't find anyone as fast as she. And she was fab with Pierce Brosnan in Tomorrow Never Dies.
Btw, did anyone notice that Shanghai Knights copied the falling and tearing the flag scene from the same stunt in Tomorrow Never Dies?
Rach, I've never been able to get into Doctor Who either. (Sorry Doctor Who fans!) Maybe it would have grown on me had I watched it more and on a regular basis but the one or two times I did watch it weren't enough to grab me. Maybe it was just those particular episodes. #dontknow#
My g/f's fave Doctor Who was Tom Baker (I hope I got his name right). She was just ga-ga over him. ;D
I suppose seeing Hugh Laurie with an American accent is rather jarring for those who knew him before House but that's all I know him from! He does Americanese so well that he fooled me into thinking he was American.
Iluvtexas, thumbs-up to Doris Day too. I think she was very under-rated as an actress/comedienne.

Yes, you got it right I can't say he makes me go ga-ga as such, but Tom Baker is brilliant I suppose seeing Hugh Laurie with an American accent is rather jarring for those who knew him before House but that's all I know him from! He does Americanese so well that he fooled me into thinking he was American. I thought he did it well (I am not in a position to give an expert opinion *grin* but it is so, so odd. I think House is the first time I ever heard him be anything other than varieties of English, and usually fairly "BBC English" varieties at that, it is very odd for me! I guess it would be like hearing someone with a very strong US accent, say deep South-ish, or Bronx, or something equally distinctive, suddenly put on a crystal clear English accent. Just... weird.
