Hmm... I still think it is a little weird, to be totally honest, that he agreed to do it, like I said before. It goes against what I'd read recently, that he had been trying to avoid being photographed and was attending shows but not wanting to be noticed. Now with that seemingly being the case, why would you then want to take part in an international award ceremony? its not as if he could avoid people taking any photos on that ocassion... and having done that will probably add to the number of paps following him, at a guess, as it put his face back on TV and might have made people wonder what he's up to and stuff.
Thats what strikes me as weird, either he wants to get back into it all or he doesn't want to but if he doesn't want to be photographed then why agree to present at the Oscars? that seems/seemed a bit peculiar... is it likely that he was asked to do this and/or maybe agreed before August, or is it something where he had to ask himself to do it(?) I wouldn't really know...
I do also think that its too easy to over analyse things though, its pretty hard to tell for sure from such a short vid clip whether he was just nervous as we say or if there may be more to it, who knows how he really feels, other than himself? *shrug*

Well, that's the thing, Lom. If it really is true that he wants to stay out of the spotlight, it's strange that he would agree to be a presenter at the Oscars. That's hardly "out of the spotlight"! So, he's either ambivalent about how he feels, or the story about him wanting to be away from the public eye is fiction.
I suspect it's fiction because, since last October, he's hardly been a hermit hiding in his house. He's been out and about a lot, mingling with humanity, and being photographed a lot, and he knows he's been photographed a lot.
Maybe he agreed to do the Oscars as sort of a warm-up act to get ready for Marley And Me? I don't know, it's just a wild guess. When he goes back to work next month, he will have to commit himself to a job, to meeting expectations, and staying put in one place for a while until the job is complete. He won't be able to go off to Peru or NYC or Hawaii or wherever he wants. So maybe the Oscar appearance was his idea of a little exercise in self-discipline for him. Again, just a wild guess. I can't get inside his head any better than anyone else.

Maybe it's also his PR people urging him to make an appearance, to show the world that all is well. He's going to have to go out sometime soon, and do film related interviews, no doubt the press will start asking him those 'ackward' questions. He's going to have to start opening up about this sometime and needs to start warming up to being out there. So this was a good opportunity to start showing everybody he's still around, looking good, without answering any 'pesky' questions.

We certainly should be cautious to believe what the gossip rags say... they'll say anything to make a story to sell papers, so *shrug* but who knows? as long as he's happy, is the main thing. Its sad, with depression I don't think you ever fully 100% lose it, perhaps he was having a slightly 'off' day or something because it does happen, even on good days you can feel a bit funny sometimes, I think anyway, sometimes im a bit like that but there again maybe its nothing to do with that and its nerves, heck who knows... its not like you got to see him for longer than what? a minute or two tops on screen... I don't think its fair to be able to make many presumptions or judge much based on that alone really... Maybe it's also his PR people urging him to make an appearance, to show the world that all is well. Also a good point! perhaps others recommended he do it? it will be interesting when starts doing more interviews...

Podbaydoor makes a good point. But I think it was more Owen's call than his PR people. If he really wanted his own life and to "chuck it all," he would have told his PR people where to go, and he'd go his own way and say goodbye to entertainment. So, if they recommended the Oscars, he agreed to it, which means he wants to maintain his entertainment career - which is really really really good news for me - er - US!!

Not only is M&M on the cards but, Drillbit Taylor's releasing on March 21, which means, appearances, screenings, press conferences etc.etc....Besides, The Oscars seemed a better option since no one would be there to ask questions.. I feel, that at some level, he is embarassed. He was visibly nervous at the awards...tell me why would a guy, who has done it 3 times already be so nervous...no, the names are not a strong reason. Also, if he was nervous, why did he choose to appear alone? If he wanted, he could have requested otherwise.. He wants his life to come back to normal, but maybe he is a little ashamed of what he did...maybe he wants to change things for the good. If that's so, I'm with you Owen!!!! #bestwishes#
but, I must say, I just love the way he says "are"

I think Owen has only presented an award one other time alone... and it's possible that he may have been nervous because he didn't have someone to play off of. Or because Owen doesn't have an "acting" background (like on stage, in front of an audience) before BR, maybe he's more comfortable with a relatively small crew of people than say hundreds of his own peers. #dontknow#
He didn't seem nervous to me though. He's been in the "hot seat" before (see the TWBS panel interview) and done very well. He just didn't look happy to me this year.

awww, I ahve not seen it but I'm not sure if I want to, if Owen looks that sad... it hurts to see Owen not all smiley and happy. I mean, he is a person and no one is happy all of the time, but I have to worry about him. I ahve two friends who attempted suicide and I knwo they are still very embarrassed about it, it's not something to want to try to explain to other people, especially nosy people who don't truly care about you yourself like reporters. I hope they leave him alone about it when he does have to do all this press stuff for his movies, I wouldn't want them to send him into a hole.

Just caught a glimpse of M&M during the ROMANCE-2008 (Robert Pattinson...eeeeuuugh). Would've been nice to see Owie and Jen together on stage. Tho an odd pair, Jen and Jack were fun to watch. So were Steve and Tina. James and Seth were hilarious. I'm still crying my eyes out for heath. I wont go on wailing here, but it was so sad... oh, and I love Hugh...

The clip was so cute! I also would have loved to see Jen & Owen present instead of Jack. However, I thought they looked cute together (Jack & Jen). Jen did strike me as being nervous, tho. I was so laughing on the floor when Ben did 'Joaquin Phoenix' impression. It was so dead on! It seemed like a lot of comedians were there, and I really missed seeing Owen & Vince.

I loved Bens bit too. So funny. I was surprised to see the Marley and Me clip. But at least we got a bit of Owen at the Oscars this year
