***Additional Review of the book....

"Big Year is full of laughs, twists and yes, some touching moments. I love bird watching and road trips but the guys in Big Year are hard core competitors who operate on an entirely different plain than the novices.

The book is so well written that you can almost see yourself sitting in the backseat of Sandy Komito's Skuamobile as he prowls down the highway looking for birds. In fact, it's so vivid that Big Year would actually make a darn good movie. While reading it I kept imagining James Cagney or Oscar Levant as Komito, Gregory Peck or Walter Pigeon as Al Levantin and a very young Jimmy Stewart as Greg Miller, the wonderful optimist who decides to do a Big Year on the cheap.

The things these guys encounter while pursuing their passion such as mountain lions, cowboys with potbellied pigs, the horrors of economy flight, crocodiles, frozen graves, and icy cold outhouses are the stuff of adventure novels with a good sized dollop of comedy thrown in.

The Big year is fascinating, fun, and daydream inducing. I and most of the readers of the book will probably never get closer to a Big Year than vicariously through the book but after reading it I have started thinking that maybe, just maybe I could survive a one county Big Day. I loved the book and even my non nature loving friends found themselves laughing out loud when I read sections of it to them."

Sounds like fun and with Ben again too - my favourite film duo. I can understand bird watching a bit more than train and plane spotting, which I have to admit I do struggle to take serious.

Wooh Wee! This looks like a great project. No chance in hell that Ben doesn't at least do a cameo.

Steve Martin Circling The Big Year
March 10th, 2010

Steve Martin could star along with Owen Wilson and Jack Black
It seems one of the recent Oscar hosts is in for a big year both literally and figuratively. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Martin is in negotiations to star in The Big Year.

If Martin signs on, he will complete the lead trio, which also includes Owen Wilson and Jack Black. The story, based off the book "The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession," by Mark Obmascik, which centers on three avid bird-watchers who keep trying to one-up each other in a competition to see who can spot the rarest birds in North America.

David Frankel (Marley & Me) will be directing the film based off the adaptation of Obmascik's book written by Howard Franklin. It was said the film was set to start shooting this May in Canada.

This sounds quite an interesting film, a different part for Owen than in Hall Pass or the Reese Witherspoon film but I like to see Owen play different characters.

There are more pictures of Owen and gang on the set of The Big Year. Unfortunately, I think you have to have a paid account to access the images. It is the same photo agency that took the pictures of Owen at the hockey game the other night and is called Punk-d Images. I looked them up and they are based in Vancouver, so I'm sure there will be lots more pictures coming. The problem is that Owen, Jack, and Steve Martin are actors whose images are not always purchased by magazines and celebrity websites, so I'm not sure if we'll have a chance to see them all. If anyone knows of a way to access all these pictures, please let us know. Here is the website:

Here is one picture that they did put up on their twitter account:

Owen looks so different here, don't you think? Maybe it's just cuz the sun was in his eyes. They sure do have him looking like a bird watching geek though, don't they? LOL.

Thanks to Punkd we should get regular pictures of Owen unlike when he was in Atlanta? Owen wore pink trousers in Little Fockers and on holiday in France I remember, I don't think these are the same ones so maybe he just likes the colour.

More pictures of Owen filming The Big Year and good close ups for a change. I would liked to have seen some from Hall Pass but that seemed to be a really closed set and nothing got out!

The black-banded fedora looks like the same one he wore in Peru with Woody 3 or 4 years ago. Not everyone can wear a hat and look good - but Owen can!

;)

Thanks for the photo links, y'all! ;)

A couple of sightings on Facebook of Owen playing tennis yesterday in Tofino, but then with a population of less than 2000 you must be certain to see some of the cast there. Local news about the filming but no Owen or any other cast members in this.

Also - not about The Big Year - someone on Facebook posted that Owen goes to the gym barefoot (must be in Paia since that's what her other post mentions). That's unusual because over here you wouldn't be allowed near the equipment without the correct footware and just the thought of someone stepping on my bare feet or equipment slamming on them - Ouch!

You can't go barefoot in American gyms either, nor in stores or basically any public area - except, of course, around pools or the beach or bathrooms in such areas and the like. Even then, I'd wear flip-flops at least - definitely in a public bathroom and shower!! Who wants athlete's foot - and God only knows what other pathogens and parasites that might be lurking about?

Owen was denied entry to a grocery store (I think) in Austin a few years ago because he was barefoot.

He does go barefoot a lot so the soles of his feet must be like cast iron. ;D It's fine to go barefoot in some places but not everywhere. That photo of him barefoot on his Vespa a few years ago kind of made me gasp. I thought: Ew, what if he has to stop fast and jump off the bike and onto pavement? OUCH!!!
